Sept 15: Portland's mini-version of Paris-Roubaix, sans cobblestones

Man, Saturday is turning out to be a jam-packed day!

Out on Sauvie Island there is going to be a bike race. WOO HOO!

This will NOT be your usual downtown crit. Except for racers doing multiple laps around a relatively compact course, everything will be different! The race will probably feel more like a fast and non-technical cyclocross race over hard-packed farm roads, featuring some potholes, some ruts, a sprinkle of gravel, a bit of sand, and depending on the weather, possibly some mud.

Git ‘R Done!!!

According to the National Weather Service there is a slight chance of rain on Saturday. Bring on the RAIN!

The picture is of Roger de Vlaeminck riding on the cobblestones! Now, neither Mr. Vlaeminck (a.k.a Mr. Paris-Roubaix) nor the cobblestones will be there this Saturday but this race will be a nice appetizer for cyclocross season in a few weeks.

I never paid much attention to the band-rehearsal squawk that used to waft through the open windows of my house in the early evenings. The leafy, artsy neighborhood where I live on the east side of Portland, Ore., is home to many a band, after all, and this squawk—though unusually loud and yelpy—sounded like a typical Pabst- and angst-fueled racket. But one day, as I was running in a park adjacent to the squawk-producing home, I realized how mistaken I'd been…READ MORE at Slate.com

Reminder: Sept 15 = Foster Art Walk + Fun on Foster

Another message from Chris just came in…this is the prvios announcement followed by his new stuff (whole schedule of events) after the cut:

Sept 15: Foster Art Walk + Fun on Foster

Some people have called Sandy Blvd. "the poor man's Burnside" or "the rich man's Foster". Well, what's up now Sandy Blvd.—Foster's moving on up! *

You might know Chris from drinking ) or from this post last month ("So, I Bought Elliott Smith").

2nd Press Release – Foster Art Walk – Fun on Foster

Saturday, September 15, 2007
10 am – 6 pm
Foster Art Walk (52nd – 65th)
Fun On Foster (50th – 92nd)

60 plus artists, street vendors, performers/clowns
20 + musical acts in 4 music areas

This is our 2nd year doing the Foster Art Walk, an independently organized
event by artists for artists on Foster. The event merged with a community
event this year, Fun on Foster, which is operated by the Foster/Powell
Business Association – the same group that helps put on Hawthorne, Belmont
and Division street fairs. The merging of the two groups has made the event
much larger and has seemingly grown more support from the Eastside community
and the arts community in general.
