Flexcar: Free Membership for many, specials for many (introductory and new)

toyota prius 2008 exterior

First, I've been flexcar-ing a lot…it's nice…really, have you driven a Toyota Prius or a Civic Hybrid or an Element? It's worth 8/10 bucks to just experience this for an hour (especially the prius = Star Trek).

I've been moving, so I needed to use Flexcar to move. Plus, I've had family in town (Pittock Mansion, Washington Park, Multnomah Falls, etc) and why deal with H(u)rtz and all those when you can drive a cool car, not worry about gas or insurance (and car rental taxes + insurance=boooo!), etc.

Flexcar Portland OregonSo, it's been good, and I will probably flex less shortly as these things will be over, to the few times a month I need it or there if there is a new cool car that I want to try out without some salesman sitting next to me.

I have been talking with the Flexcar peeps (good peeps) a lot lately trying to understand it fully as the website can be confusing at times. I will continue to post here about that as it is really a fantastic program.

Again: Julian's Flexcar number 93449: join and hook me up with credit :)

Ok, after the “more” jump a ton of info on specials for new member (free for a lot of people, and specials for current members…plus, they have a bunch of special events every month, but haven't updated for October yet…

Sept 30: The Hive at Plan B: Another Message for Dave Mathews perhaps?

The Hive is at PLAN B tonight. This show, plus Heidi at the B-Side tonight means you never have to leave the B-Triangle (as Mr. Jeff coined it).

The Hive at Plan Be bar, Portland, Oregon 97214

This is from their orignal show there

Sunday: The Hive Has a Message for Dave Matthews

The Hive makes its big move to Plan B (formerly Acme) tomorrow. It should be interesting and you can read more about the Hive show at this earlier post (And The Lord Said, On Day Seven, I Will See Hive at Plan B Bar)

I asked Ms. Chris if she thought Dave Matthews was a musical genius or a musical prodigy—I mean come on—Dave Matthews* is changing people's lives! Her response follows:

I'm sooo not a fan. I think he starts and ends every song very well, I actually like those parts, but the bridge is my kryptonite. So I'm being diplomatic and not siding either way. Better to just stay silent. Now if you asked about the Clash or Depeche Mode or The Guess Who. I could give you my opinion.

Thanks,

MS!!! Chris

Sept 30: Daily Stank Image Bank: Is it Christmas at the B-Side? Heidi is Bar-tending!

*Edit: I originally had the day as Oct 1st, but it is tonight, Sept 30!*
B-Side, Burnside, Portland Oregon
I love Tanya and Joel…I was there the first night the B-Side opened (and only broke one table and chair), and I was there looking for it the night before it opened (thanks for that tanya boobies, b-side, basement pub, bunside, portland oregontext-message BC).

BUT…Heidi is bar tending at the B-Side tonight (Tanya's on vacations- lucky!). Yes, that Heidi, The one from Meat, and formerly of the BOG (Bar of Gods).
Simon Goetz the PageCrusher and the Mayor of Belmont

When I first moved to Portland, I met up with the mayor the second evening. He wasn't the M.O.B yet, as he was living off Hawthorne (South of Hawthorne and north of 39th=dirty laundry= mayoral recall).

Anyway, he (and some others) took me Meat for Cats and Dogs, Burnside, Portland Oregonup to the Bar of Gods where we drank many $2 special beers and dropped about $50 to get past level 4 or 5 of Archanoid table-top (where did it go?!).

That is where I met Hiede. So, Heidi is my first Portland bartender, and she was top of the game before moving onto MEAT. Now, I don't have a pet, but I've been to MEAT, see MEAT hoodies everywhere, and friends who have gone their swear by it–plus, ummm, it's called MEAT!

Oct 5-7: Lovecraft, Writers, and Booksales; Oh My!

Looking for some inexpensive fun next weekend? Here's your to-do list.

Friday, Oct 5: Attend the HP Lovecraft Film Festival at the Hollywood Theater. If you try to keep Portland weird, then this is your scene. In the early 20th century, Lovecraft wrote a series of strange and horrific stories that influenced writers like Stephen King, Neil Gaiman and Michael Chabon. The Festival presents a variety of professional and amateur Lovecraftian films on three screens. Get there at seven for the Cthulhu blessing. If you want to try before you buy, read At the Mountains of Madness or Cthulhu 2000, a collection of stories inspired by Lovecraft. The Festival runs Friday through Sunday night.

Saturday, Oct 6: Attend the Friends of the Library Book Sale at 3016 SE Division (the former Wild Oats.) This sale features tens of thousands of books for as little as a dollar. These aren't crummy cast-offs either, these books are donated by your book-loving Portland neighbors, so the selection is excellent. You might want to give yourself a limit on how much you can buy. Mine is the amount I can comfortably carry. Sale starts on Friday for members ($30 at the door) and is free for all starting Saturday.

Sunday, Oct 7: Head to Burnside Powells at 7:30PM to see three small-press book authors from Akashic books. Chris Abani (Song For Night,) Joe Meno (Tender as Hellfire,) and Felicia Luna Lemus ( Like Son,) will read from their books and take questions. Akashic's mission is the “reverse gentrification of literature,” and the subject matter, which includes Nigerian child soldiers, alienated youth and gender identity, reflects it. Here's your chance to meet some new authors.
