March 28: Dave Allen and DJ Izm – tonight at East in Chinatown | MP3s

Me and Juliette Lewis in Japan with a photo-shopped DJ Izm muscling in….

DJ Izm and me spent Wednesday night in the Nemo shed working out a cool set that we'll road test at East in Chinatown tonight and then next week we'll really be rocking the house at a private party somewhere in downtown Portland, [more on this after the event, sorry folks.] Occasionally Izm has sent me his mixes and mash ups – there's a cool 50 minute set here – and here he channels the Big Lebowski. In this one he mashes Leonard Cohen. All good stuff. Yesterday he surprised me by sending over a MP3 of a track that he and I laid down in 2002 I believe [Izm correct me if I'm wrong.] Not sure who put down the female vocals but I'm loving the huge fat bottom end so crank up the sub woofer for this one. It's clearly a work in progress but there's something very sublime about it inna a dub style. It sits real nice alongside the 4 Hero/J Dilla cut too…

March 28-30: Faux Film Festival at Hollywood Theater

I was at the opening day of the Faux Film Festival last year. Luckily, a friend made it there thirty minutes earlier than I or we might not have gotten a seat. Yes, it was packed.

I'm not going to say I was terribly impressed with the majority of what I saw, but the crowd was enjoying it thoroughly and I'm sure it will be packed again.

FauxFilm.com has the rundown of info…and is up for the ugliest website I have seen in weeks (other than this one).

March 27: Meetin Portland's Mingler | 130+ RSVPs and 1000+ Views | The City

It's time for that monthly Meetin Mingler, where 100+ people go to a bar and…well, mingle. With over one thousand views and all those RSVPs, this one should be packed as well.

Plus, unintentional or not–tonight is the kickoff of the Sweet 16–meaning there will be a lot more people at The City to watch March Madness on their many (many, many) televisions.

The City, All Madden Burger, Portland, Oregon

Lastly, is the blood flowing to easily through your arteries? The City has the answer for only $17: one pound of ground beef, a pound of hot wings, and a pound of fries! Apparently, something happens (death?) if you finish it all in under 15 minutes.

March 27: PDXpo 2008 Brings Portland's Design Community Together.

From Melissa Delzio:
PDXpo

PDXpo 2008 Brings Portland's Design Community Together.
Annual AIGA Portland Event Showcases Creative Industry.

Alicia Johnson and Hal Wolverton are Executive Creative Directors at Euro RSCG in New York. Yes, we know what you're thinking. PDXpo is about the Portland design community. And no, Johnson + Wolverton, the seminal studio founded by our presenters, no longer keeps a Portland address. But there is no question that the studio's footprint has sustained, the work endures, and the community of designers with whom the couple has worked flourishes. Right here in Portland.

Creatives are invited to join AIGA Portland Thursday, March 27 at Portland Center for the Performing Arts (Winningstad Theater) as Alicia and Hal reflect on Portland, and present the creative work their firm created for Amnesty International, the Sundance Channel and Miller Genuine Draft, among others. Experience the work of their notable collaborators; the designers, artists, agencies, directors, animators, photographers, writers and musicians who call Portland home. Plus, you'll get a peek at how their next chapter in New York, shaping Jaguar and the world's most memorable luxury brands, is playing out for two of our city's most formative design icons. Keynote begins at 8:10 p.m., Winningstad Theater, PCPA.

About the Expo
PDXpo means many things to many people. In its third year under the banner of PDXpo, AIGA Portland is excited to provide this showcase to the creative community. The Expo is an opportunity to stay connected with Portland's most notable graphic arts vendors and service providers and get real-world answers to design questions; from education, to ink and interface. Join AIGA's Portland chapter for hors d'oeuvres and a beverage (or two) during the Expo and mingle with the local design community. The Portland Design Expo starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA),

March 26: Voting, Drinking, Cupcakes, Comedy | Ash St Saloon

From Allison and Melanie:

Thirsty Voter PDX, PictureOur last two events at Basement and B-side were really busy. We had much more turnout than expected and registered a lot of people. How exciting. Some people just even wanted to talk politics and eat cupcakes with us, which was great.

So anyway, we just found out we'll be going to Ash St. Saloon tomorrow and drinking and registering alongside the Grand Theft Pizza Party. We could all use some comedy.

If you're interested in what we're doing this week:

Wed. March 26: Ash St./alongside Grand Theft Pizza Party
Sat. March 29: Back at B-side by popular demand

March 28: 'Please Don't Leave Me' | Opposable Thumb Gallery | Free Spirits

Is it too early to look forward to Friday? (NO!)

On Friday, there is a book release, reading, and party at the Opposable Thumb Gallery. Many people probably don't know this place yet, but it was Kaiju (sp?), and it is between St. Cupcake and Laughing Planet on SE Belmont. I saw somewhere that there will be a free keg O' Beer there, and that works for me…Details sent over from Jaret Ferratusco:

Synopsis from back cover of the book:

'Please Don't Leave Me' Book Cover pictureWith these twelve stories, Jaret Ferratusco presents unsettling vignettes of people existing at the very fringes of self, society, and reality. Through investigations of the psychology of seemingly ordinary individuals —from the haunted confines of childhood to the void of isolation in adult life—these stories offer harrowing glimpses of a hidden world around us—a world that for some becomes inescapably and horribly real. In the tradition of the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME presents the reader with narratives that pit the conceits of the everyday and tactile world against an encroaching and undefined menace of horror and the macabre in a struggle for sanity, identity, and survival.
