May 2: Furry Kama Sutra – Anonymous Sex at Nemo First Friday

Kama Sutra Pampelmoose Nemo Design Photography Michael Cogliantry Nemo Design presents Furry Kama Sutra, a photography/Video exhibition by New York based photographer Michael Cogliantry, opening on May 02, 2008. The show will run through Tuesday, June 01, 2008 at Nemo Design: 1875 SE Belmont Street in Portland, OR. Furry Kama Sutra is the title for a new project by New York based photographer / director Michael Cogliantry.

For this series, Cogliantry captures the little seen world of Furry in a series of photographs and videos that are part position manual, part sexual sub-culture exploration. Dressed as an animal of their choice, Furries are considered the ultimate explorers of anonymous sex. In the fur suit, one can leave the confines of the computer room and venture out into other's bedrooms, remaining totally anonymous.

Groups are based largely online, but hold conventions all over the world, usually barring the media. The collection of seven 40 x 50" color photographs poses and three video episodes were shot at various "by-the-hour" motels around Las Vegas. Nemo Design (Nemodesign.com) is a Portland-based integrated branding, marketing and design shop. Nemo Design's capabilities include brand strategy, design, motion graphics, interactive development, film, video, print and photography production. Nemo Design is located at 1875 SE Belmont Street in Portland, OR.

From The Moose

I say 'shhh'; someone at the courthouse says 'SHsssss"

Hello, this is C-Block from TriMetiquette. When I'm not writing about TriMet Etiquette, I'm on the lookout for zany Portland weird stuff.

I accompanied my fiancee to the courthouse last week. She was subpoenaed and had to be there for a couple of hours, waiting to hear whether they would need her to testify. I accompanied her to the Multnomah County Courthouse downtown where I spotted this beautiful sign on the third floor:

Honestly, I found this sign to be really weird. I mean, isn't it “shhh!” or some variation on it? What exactly does “SHsssss” mean and how do you pronounce it?

Do you say, “SHsssss!” Would that be how you would write it down? If not, do you think it's a little weird?

May 2: No Pants Day in Portland?

In January, there was a “no pants on the max day” that was so well publicized that there were possibly more bloggers and newspapers/”alternative weeklies” covering it than actual participants. Yet, it is somewhat difficult to find the official, international (go Canada) “no pants day” event in Portland.

Where will the “no pants” action happen in Portland? Here is the official website and find out/organize your own “no pants day” event. From the myspace event page:

No Pants Day is a day where everyone, be they students, respectable businessmen, or cherished community leaders, leave their pants behind. Usually this means wearing thick, appropriately modest boxer shorts, but bloomers, slips, briefs, and boxer-briefs all work as well.

No Pants Day picture

Here is what Drunken Rampage has to say:

No Pants Day is a hallowed tradition going back many generations (in this website's copywriter's immediate family at least, only they call it “Tuesday”), and Portland shall revel in the glory of pantsless fun. Huzzah! Rumor has it that people wearing no pants will dress as pantsless barbarians and pantslessly rait a vegan Pirate restaurant while carrying pantsless meat products and skewered pantsless stuffed aninmals on stakes. Google it, and you will know the place

April 28: Kevin Phillips at the Bagdad

Kevin Phillips is a former Republican party strategist who is now better known for a series of books criticizing the current GOP, as well as analyzing underlying influences on American politics and economics. In Wealth and Democracy, he analyzed the (baleful to his mind) impact of the rich on American politics. His American Dynasty is a critique of the “House of Bush.” In American Theocracy, Phillips bemoaned the role of religion, oil and debt in America.

His latest book, Bad Money, looks at how finance became an increasingly significant and dangerous element of the American economy. Powells is bringing Phillips to the Bagdad Theater to discuss the book. He will be speaking at 7PM on Monday April 28. Tickets are $26 (and include a copy of the book) and are available here.

While Phillips has strong viewpoints, he is a fair and reasonable person and his presentation is likely to be informative, if potentially dispiriting. Finance is not a topic that comes easy to most readers, so this speech may be of extra value.

If you want a test drive, listen to Phillips discussing his book on the Diane Rehm show.

Cut Copy live at Doug Fir, Monday April 28th plus free MP3 and a Mixtape

I became a fan of Australia's Cut Copy through their online mix tapes which have been made available here and there. Their album Bright Like Neon Love came out in 2004 and this March you can now get Lights and Music which is a remix ep by the look of it. Visit the Cut Copy blog to get a free download of a track from their upcoming new release 'In Ghost Colours.' I overheard someone at the party say “why's it taken so long for a band to come along and pick up where New Order left off?”..true, true a fine compliment.

The boys are extremely personable and very clear about their situation but they still foolishly allowed themselves to be interviewed by me. Because of the background noise and their thick Australian accents they may have got off lightly during the Moose interrogation….two takeaway quotes from the interview for me when I asked them about the internet and the ability to get music into peoples hands were “The powers gone back into the hands of the bands” and “It's time for the labels to try and catch up.” That must put a chill into the hearts of the folks at their label, Interscope.

Watch the YouTube version here or right-click/control click to download your own iTunes/iPhone version here. And you can get their rather fabulous mix tape here. Cut Copy – Lights and Music
