August 30: Portland Pie-Off | Washington Park Picnic Shelter

I received this message from LeLo in Nopo the other day. It looks like it will be a tasty-great time, and I do have a “High on Pie” kind of attitude most of the time. You have two days left, so start baking. If you can't bake, but want to try the pies out, LeAnn/Lelo has this to say:

If you're not bringing a pie, you can still come and love some pie with everyone: after judging, it will be first come first served, so I wouldn't be late!

Event Info:

The Portland Pie Commission is pleased to announce the 2008 Portland Pie-Off on Saturday August 30th, 3:00 PM at the Washington Park Picnic Shelter (aka the Elephant House). Part contest, part community celebration of all things pie, the Portland Pie-Off is a chance to meet other pie lovers, win fun prizes with your pie-making prowess, swap recipes and eat pie! Mmmpie!

The rules are simple: Make a homemade pie (or several pies), show up promptly at 3:00 PM with $5.00 cash and submit as many as you wish in one or more of the 8 different categories (there are 12 categories for judging: see the website for details). Or just bring a pie for eating. In fact, we don't even care if you bring a pie as long as you come with a stellar HIGH ON PIE attitude and an appetite. This is a grass-roots effort and it's a first come first serve basis: don't be late! Parking is sparse: plan ahead! Better yet, you can also RSVP at: www.pie-off.blogspot.com and join in the on-going pie banter, information, stories and pie art leading up to the big day.

Destination DIY (formerly DIY, Portland) is a monthly radio show and podcast highlighting revolutionary do-it-yourself projects. Our 31st episode will focus on the delights and challenges of raising plants and animals in the city while holding down a day job.

Host and producer Julie Sabatier will offer listeners a peek into this year's Tour de Coops (http://www.growing-gardens.org/portland-gardening-resources/chickens.php), where Portland's backyard chicken farmers reveal the secrets to their success. Sarah Brown and Connor Voss at Diggin' Roots Farm (a CSA) (http://www.digginrootsfarm.com/) will discuss the challenges of raising livestock and vegetables on 2 rented acres plot surrounded on all sides by suburban neighbors. You'll also hear from the folks at Tryon Life Community Farm (http://tryonfarm.org/share/), an alternative community and educational farm surrounded by a state park** within Portland city limits. A photo slide show will be available at www.destinationdiy.org thanks to photographer Tim LaBarge. (slide-show is very cool-go look!)

*Side Note: I actually did have some backyard/urban chickens in Germany. It's very nice to have fresh eggs all the time, and maintenece/cost is rather low.
**If you haven't been to Tryon Park, you should go now while the weather is still nice. It is one of the best parks in Portland. Info here

Portland Happy Hours on Your Google Homepage

I had breakfast with Bryan of UrbanDrinks yesterday and he showed me something that might change your life. For those of you who use an iGoogle homepage (and the rest of you who will–you can only resist them so long), UrbanDrinks has created a Portland happy-hour Google “gadget”.

Portland Happy Hour Gadget-widget

Go here to get the widget (I mean gadget).
As you can see in the screen-grab, there is an arrow on the top right of the gadget. Click this to edit your preferences. You can modify the timeframe (either right now or today), search radius, number of happy hours to display, the order by which to sort the results, and the direction to sort. Ha–look how close I live to the “lounges” of both Bonfire and Goodfoot (jealous much?).

Oh, and according to Bryan, soon you'll be able to choose which types of happy hours you're looking for. Nice…using technology for good. That, apparently, is the the UrbanDrinks way. :)

Lastly, a note to UrbanDrinks (and you). According to Allison's PSA back in June and verified by myself, Bonfire's Happy Hour now begins at 2PM with some great food deals.
