Scream at the Beach looks like a fun time (Zombie Apocalypse) and this picture really sells it. Jeff has another (disturbing-ish) photo of a Scream at the Beach character here. Here is an earlier post about Scream at the Beach.

Portland and bikes are BFF, so what could be better then accessorizing it with a costume for Halloween? this one was created for this month's Kidical Mass ride. wittco.gmbh writes this about the ride and picture:

Kidical Mass, a term co-opted from the Critical Mass bike movement, which was co-opted from the concept of Critical Mass–it takes a certain amount of something to get the movement moving.

Kidical Mass is a fun ride through the city of Portland, the third Friday of the month.

This month, the bikes and people donned a Halloween theme.

Now, that's a good parent. Would you like to adopt the pipeline so I can rock that Bakfiets all over town?

Vintage Slides of Oregon With NPR Contributor, Charles Phoenix | October 23

A message from DK Comet:
Mid-Century Historian, pop-culture humorist, book author & NPR contributor, Charles PhoenixThe Mid-Century Modern League (based here in Portland) is a nonprofit volunteer organization, founded in 2007 committed to bringing greater recognition, celebration and preservation of the unique mid-century modern architecture, signage, businesses and history within Oregon.

On October 23rd, we are bringing Mid-Century Historian, pop-culture humorist, book author & NPR contributor, Charles Phoenix to town to perform a comedy slide show.

He's very well known in Los Angeles & Las Vegas for his funny slide show performances using found slides from the 50s, 60s & 70s.

We are trying to introduce him to Portlanders in our effort to educate the public about our special landmarks.

"I'll actually be projecting the original vintage slides. This is the real thing not Power Point." says Charles.  "And of course I'll be showing some amazing vintage slides of Oregon in the 50s and 60s!"

More about him here: http://www.charlesphoenix.com/

Elliott Smith: Five Years Later | "his influence in Portland's music scene"

I purchased this Elliott Smith art piece from local artist and musician, Chris Haberman, August of last year. Chris has a great story of meeting with Elliot while creating this piece. You can ask him about it and see more of his artwork at his website.

Elliott Smith died on October 21, 2003 at age 34, and today marks the fifth anniversary of that sad ocasion.

You can listen to a show on Elliot Smith that aired earlier today on OPB's Think Out Loud about his life and work. OPB will also play music by Elliot Smith throughout the day. (OPB.org).
Elliott Smith by Chris Haberman

From OPB:

Elliott Smith, Five Years Later

[Posted by Scott Silver on October 17, 2008]

Ten years ago, singer-songwriter Elliott Smith appeared at the 70th Annual Academy Awards to play his Oscar-nominated song “Miss Misery” from the soundtrack to Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting:

For many viewers around the country, it was their first introduction to Smith. But for many Oregonians, Smith's was already a familiar face. He had been living in Portland on and off since he was 14 years old, and his music bore the imprint of the city. His lyrics were littered with references to various Portland locations and landmarks….

Where do you hear his influence in Portland's music scene — or in your own musical career? How does Eliott Smith reverberate today? Read more and listen to the show

By the way, it is pledge drive over at OPB, so don't forget to give a little if you can to keep great programming like this coming.
