We are getting close to Santacon 2008. This picture is from 2005 and Jason sent this information about it:

This shot was taken during Santacon, in 2005, outside of Mary's club downtown. The bike cops followed us around all day just to make sure Santa didn't get too crazy. They were actually pretty cool about the whole thing, despite getting harassed all day by drunk people in Santa suits.

You can view a lot of great Santacon pictures and information from last year here. This message was sent from Drunken Rampage about the upcoming Satacon on December 6:

December is almost upon us, Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Thanksgiving Day Interactive Experience: Turkey Tracker

Pipeline received a message from fellow twitterer Robin Parker about a nice Portland interactive Thanksgiving Day experience. You can read a nice break down of what happens at Mental Floss here.

From Robin:
thanksgiving turkeySome friends and I are doing a collaborative live Thanksgiving website for the second year in a row, and we'd like our fellow Portlanders to join the fun online!  http://TurkeyTracker.com

We use Ustream, Flickr and Twitter to create an interactive webcast of our turkey smoking. We have a camera (probably 2 this year) trained on the smoker, which broadcasts all day. We take pictures throughout the cooking process and post those as we take them, alongside a twitter feed that includes automatic updates from a USB thermometer rig (which got mentioned on MAKE, actually! ).

Because a big part of our goal is to connect with family and friends who are also enjoying the holiday, we have chat (via Ustream) and a Flickr pool that others can post photos to, which are then randomly cycled for display on the site. We'll also be reading people's Thanksgiving “Thank You's” live when they direct message them to us on Twitter! Read the rest of this entry »

The Young Professionals of Portland are putting on networking event plus benefit for the Salvation Army. We are all being affected by this economy in some way, but many of our fellow Portlanders are really being hurt with the loss of charity resources and increased needs.

Around this time of thanks and bitter cold (hello Portland Winter, almost forgot about you), this is a good way to help those in need and get a free drink ticket (twofer!) as well.

From YPOP (event here):

Matt Higgs in Portland Tonight: Free Lecture at PSU

Portland State MFA department really does an amazing job of bringing interesting free lectures. If you have anything else going on tonight–drop it.

Photo from Frank Prattle. He has an interview with Matt Higgs here.

Info from PSU:

Matthew Higgs (b.1964. Wakefield, England) is a curator, critic and artist currently living and working in New York. Since the early 1990s he has sought to develop a practice that considers the intersections and overlaps between these disciplines. A primary facet of this approach has been the development of an ongoing, inter-generational dialogue amongst artists — through his exhibitions, projects and publications.

Higgs is currently the Director and Chief Curator of White Columns, New York's oldest non-profit art space. Since his arrival at White Columns in the fall of 2004 he has organized more than seventy-five individual exhibitions and projects, showing the work of more than 400 international artists of all generations. He has taught extensively over the past ten years and was a lecturer at Goldsmiths College, London and the Royal College of Art, London. Read the rest of this entry »
