I was just over at the Election office dropping off my ballot. Huge line out there of people, but everyone looked enthused to be a part of this historic moment.

Portland Concert Sweep Week '08: Matt Nathanson, Jessie Baylin

aladin theater

By MeaganKate

I'm an eclectic kind of gal.

When I was younger, I listened to Blink 182, Backstreet Boys AND Brandy. I hung with all the crowds, because I understood the value of all music. Even that one time when I purchased Jennifer Love Hewitt's single “Barenaked” by mistake – I wasn't totally disappointed.

So, this week is going to be chalk full of music for me. And by chalkfull I mean I'm going to three concerts and you should all be jealous!

The first one was actually Sunday night at The Aladdin. And I must say it's one of the best shows I've been to in a long, long time. His name is Matt Nathanson, and we are in love. I started listening to him about five years ago when American Wedding came out, and his song, “Laid” was on the soundtrack.

Since then, he's had moderate success and built a solid fan base. With this new album, Some Mad Hope, and its two biggest singles “Car Crash” and “Come On Get Higher”, Matt has begun to dig a spot for himself in the acoustic-crooner-with-a-dirty-mouth genre.

Opening the show was Jessie Baylin, whose voice caught me off guard. I researched her before the show, because I had never heard of her, and wasn't sure I'd be into her based on the songs I listened to online. But, as soon as she started singing, the Aladdin Theater was quiet, and people were totally transfixed by her. It doesn't hurt anyone that she's disarmingly beautiful.

“Hello Portland,” she tantalized, “you perfect city, you.”

Her stage presence was sexy, though her tights Read the rest of this entry »

Portland Election Events Update | Holocene & Aura | November 4

Some new entries that were  missed in the big list of election watch parties. These both look like fun times unless John McCain were to somehow win. But…not gonna happen. Karl Rove said so.

From Holocene:

ELECTION NIGHT PARTY!!!
with DJ Beyonda link

For those of you feeling a bit tense about this whole election business, why not unwind a bit within the comfort of your favorite local haunt? We've got full election coverage on the big walls, specials and the definite possibility of special celebratory treats (wink). With the Elections Office right across the street, you might even get your face on the news!

DJ Beyonda will kick it into the new age with a dance party: If McCain wins, we'll go down dancing into the miserable, soul-sucking abyss. If Obama wins, run with that post-election euphoria and dance until you literally drop…You'll have affordable healthcare soon! Aren't politics fun?
