The Hotel Cafe Tour in Portland: Hot Chicks Drinking Heavily & Liquid Sex

By Meagan Kate

“You didn't think we'd be slurring this early, did you?” Thao Nguyen giggled as she sipped her whiskey from a plastic cup.

Friday night at the Doug Fir, six amazing women performed for the eager Portland audience in a show like nothing I've ever seen before. The Hotel Cafe Tour began as the brainchild of Cary Brothers, an amazing singer songwriter, who enjoyed playing at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles because of its intimate feel and openness for artists to push each other creatively. He decided to take the show on the road, and this year — the tour is comprised of eighteen women.

At each individual show, and random number of women play — but rather than having each woman play an entire set, the women would each play a few songs, and jump off stage for another girl to jump on. They were jamming together, singing backup for each other, and heckling one another from backstage. There is audience group streching, singalongs, and last night, there was a delicious rendition of “Milkshake.” There was no intermission, just two and a half hours of music. It was heaven.

Lenka, Meiko, Thao Nguyen, Emily Wells - singing back up for Rachael Yamagata

Last night, we were lucky enough to see Rachael Yamagata, Meiko, Lenka, Emily Wells, Thao Nguyen and Portland's own transplant, Catherine Feeny.

I had been exposed to Rachael, Meiko, Lenka, Catherine & Thao. But I was so pleasantly surprised when I saw Emily Wells. I can honestly say she was the most creative performer I have ever seen in my concert going days. [Don't tell the Backstreet Boys.] Her mix of classical violin and hip hop is incredible – but what I enjoyed most was that she mixed her songs right in front of the audience.

I find it a bit hard to explain, so if you go to her MySpace page — you can watch videos of her concerts. I promise you that you'll be blown away. And I'm sure it didn't help that I had a few whiskey sours and was ready to hear some hot beats. I'm a sucker for hot beats.

Also, I will say that as a straight woman who is highly comfortable with her sensuality – these girls were gorgeous! I love to see a bunch of hot chicks who drink heavily and rock on stage. Each woman is so talented but so different, it made for a totally unique concert experience. img_2193

Lenka has a playful sound that comes across in her image and videos – her songs double as lullabys or schoolyard songs. She also has a really cute keyboard with felt hearts hanging off of it. And I don't want to alarm anyone – but I ran into her in the bathroom at the Doug Fir. I told her I loved her dress. I feel this makes us best friends.

Meiko has a sweet, smooth voice that works along with her folk/indie music. She is well known for some of  her songs on movie soundtracks, and her new single “Boys With Girlfriends” is blowing up on mainstream alternative radio.

Thao Nguyen has a far more acoustic/classical sound, but her show was really fun. She loves to stomp around, and the power in her voice is hard to miss.

Catherine Feeny is an acoustic songwriter with a soothing voice, and a more mature sound to her. She just moved to Portland from the UK, so if you have a chance to catch her — don't miss it. She was humble and excited to be with these women who asked her to join on for their Portland show.

Finally, Rachael Yamagata – arguably the most well known of the performers – was incredible, as usual. Her voice is like liquid sex and she's an exquisite guitar and piano player.

These women are fun to see individually, but this show was one of the best experiences I've had. Especially for $17. There was only one time I had that much fun for under $20, but I promised I wouldn't put that on the internet. I don't break promises.

Check their individual sites for upcoming shows, as the Hotel Cafe Tour is over on the 18th, with their show in Los Angeles.

Oh, and to their guitar player with the broken pinkey (Jason, I believe — if you were there and remember, please correct me) – I am in love with you. E-mail me ::wink::

What a great show right?!?!? My personal fave was MEIKO – I didn’t have enough $ to buy her album at the show, but I just bought it on iTunes – If you’re reading this and not familiar with Meiko, check out http://www.myspace.com/meiko – soooo good!
