Tool Shed PDX, a local non-profit, is hosting a Maker Mixer on March 1st which is intended to be both a meet-n-greet event and a chance to begin conversations about how shop businesses, tool manufacturers, contractors, artists and governments can work together to survive the recession.
We will have several speakers, live demos, bands, and beer and IT IS ALL FREE TO THE PUBLIC, even the beer.
Press Release:
Portland, Oregon. Tool Shed, PDX presents Aphelion: A Celebration of the Recession, the first of a series of bi-monthly Maker Mixer conferences where crafters, tradespeople, industrial artists, educators, local government and businesses can network, share ideas and connect resources. Often those who work in the crafts and trades have no common alliance with those who pursuit arts for personal expression. Currently there is no forum, no central gathering place to discuss how these players can come together to strengthen our local craft, small business and industrial arts industries. Tool Shed, PDX's bi-monthly Maker Mixer conferences seek to address this. The first of these conferences will take place Sunday March 1st 2009, from 3-10pm at the Watershed Industrial Arts Community Center. This is event is free and open to the creative public!
Participants can enjoy an entertaining meet ‘n' greet of other crafts folk in the trades. The conference will focus on presenting available local resources for small independent artisan businesses. Speakers from the Regional Arts and Cultural Council, the Rebuilding Center and the Oregon Tradeswomen will be among those in attendance/presenting. In addition there will be phenomenal craft and industrial art demonstrations, live music, vaudeville performance, ‘contractor carnival games', and door prizes!
Attendees can expect to be able to:
•Â   Discuss ways the city can support workers during the recession
•Â   Meet directly with local Business and Marketing Resources
•Â   Discuss downsizing/sharing shops during the recession
•Â   Cool Demonstrations by local artist.
•Â   Live music by Trash Can Joe and _Orkestra
•Â   Give Away Prizes
•Â   Free Ninkasi Beer
