Huh?  I'm sorry I don't understand.  What are you saying?  Deelay Ceelay?  What the…?

Abstractly it is a merry blend of tune, percussion, color, and light synthesized into danceable intellectual melody; a fuzzy rocket scientist.  The more literal explanation is it's a band name that represents a playful rendition off the names of its two members, Delaney Kelly and Chris Lael Larson.

Part live and part electronically pre-recorded (synched with a projected experimental video experience) tonight's Deelay Ceelay show at Backspace will impress even the most jaded self-proclaimed music connoisseurs. Ã‚  Do not expect to see or hear the typical live set. All I am going to say is Delaney and Chris both play drum kits on stage.  Their sound resonates a calm complexity full of rich enthusiasm that unites audience with instrumentation.  In other words — you will feel it.

Last Saturday I joined my fellow Portland-Derby goers in the huge warehouse practice space, called "The Hanger" at Oaks Park Roller Skating Rink. The stadium was packed to capacity, bodies spilling off the few benches and crammed together on the floor (in designated areas, of course). Roller derby conjured images of Mad-Max battle cages, and having never seen a bout before, I expected a few of the derby girls to come out in chain mail and leather and battle to the death in an iron dome. Instead, the ladies came bursting into the rink, dressed in an explosion of Lycra, glitter, purple tights, and imposing body padding (some of which looked suspiciously like armor). When the glitter settled, the players stood proud atop their multicolored skate wheels, in fierce display of determination and ruthlessness.
