Cowboy Up: Molalla Oregon Buckeroo | July 11-August 30
July 6, 2009 — PDXPIPELINEPosted by Sasha Burchuk
Molalla is only 45 Minutes from Portland, and They Have a Rodeo.
What's great about a visit to the Molalla Buckeroo is that you'll get to watch a bunch of well-built young men turn worst-case horse or bull scenarios into elegant displays of skilled mastery. As the night progresses the stunts just get better and better — they start off with the Barrel Races, that wonderful cowgirl sport; then come the steers and the steer-wrestlers, and then those intrepid studs, the bucking bronc riders. All of this, however, is just foreplay to the ten scrawny cowboy champions riding ten massive world champion bulls. At ten p.m. the tension was so thick at the bullpen where the buckaroos were stretching that I wondered if someone wasn't going to make a noose out of his lasso.
Aside from the great horse gymnastics, country music, curly fries and the beautiful leather-fringed Sweethearts of the Rodeo, it's worth it just for the banter of the announcers. They say exactly the kinds of ironic things that we city-folk would want them to say — things like, "These bucking horses will jerk the snot right of your nose!" It's a real…cultural experience. And the food isn't terrible, either. A couple of diplomats from Molalla's sizable Mexican community are there serving some delicious tacos and Portland's Edelweiss Sausage Co. has a stand selling bratwurst and beer sausage.
Upcoming Events at the Molalla Buckeroo:
July 11 & 12 — Willamette Valley Junior Rodeo
July 15 — BRN4D Barrel Racing
July 18 — Dale Collins Memorial Roping
July 29 — BRN4D Barrel Racing
August 7 & 8 — Ross Coleman Invitational PBR
August 15 — MEXICAN RODEO (THIS SHOULD BE GREAT!)
August 29 & 30 — Oregon Mounted Shooting Association Buckeroo Shootout

Things to do while in Molalla:
Visit Feyrer Park on the Molalla River — a lovely place to pass a hot summer day with the locals. Just don't bring any piñatas. There are ample (racist) signs posted throughout the park that prohibit them.
Grab a stiff drink at The White Horse on W. Main Street. You can't miss it — it's the bar with the giant plastic white horse rearing up.
Eat some ribs at Fathead's Barbecue. They also have delicious brisket, and if business is slow and you've got a minute, talk to the boss about nothin' in particular.
