From Jason of Floating World
The Lonesome King:Â A look at the iconography, obsessions and motifs
of Michael Jackson's music and videos.
Featuring several long-form Michael Jackson music videos, including Thriller, Bad, and Smooth Criminal, as well as rare videos Captain EO & Michael Jackson's Ghosts.
UPDATE: I actually got some info sent over and it is after the break…
The K of P is constantly spoken of as a musical genius–particularly of recent–and, alternately, a reclusive freak. As if they're somehow two separate entities. With this lecture, I'm going to try to explore how these two sides mingled in his art, using his visual work (videos, performances, short films) as my primary source. From his performance at the Motown 25 special in 1983, the Thriller mini-movie up through, through Bad, Smooth Crimial and beyond, Jackson forged a visual language referencing old Hollywood, Broadway theater, soul singers, and strip teases. No other pop star has ever attracted the Hollywood talent like Michael–Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas (Captain EO), Martin Scorcese (Bad), Steven Spielberg (ET)–except, maybe, Bob Dylan, who I think has quite a bit in common with Jackson, artistically speaking.
We'll be showing these videos, as well as Captain EO, Michael Jackson's Ghosts* and some of his short-form videos, and I'll be speaking briefly between each video, connecting the dots as I see them. My talk will draw fairly heavily from Margot Jefferson's book On Michael Jackson, an interesting history of Jackson's childhood, influences, art and prosecution.
*Ghosts is an incredibly interesting, and creepy, work. Never shown in America, it was made in 1997, after allegations about child molestation had been leveled at Jackson. In it, he plays a sorcerer living outside a small American Gothic town. The local kids all come to play at his house. But their parents, egged on by the Mayor, are worried that Michael's exposing their children to evil, and come to his mansion to confront him. Spooks, spells, shenanigans ensue. It was financed by some Dubai oil men and, upon viewing, its obvious why it never played here.
