This may be a crazy loop. Heard it on facebook that “friends” saw him at 24 hour fitness and talked to him about it. Tried to confirm on twitter this morning, but it turns out that the person that i thought was an outside source might also be “friends” with the very same ppl that told MY facebook friend, cause this outside source also said he heard it from “friends” who saw Dave at 24 hour fitness…

Well when he performs in a club he usually goes all night. A friend of mine has seen him a couple times and one time in SF he stayed on stage till like 4 or 5am. I’m curious how the city will deal with an impromtu performance in the square. I think an open mic situation like Chris V. said is more likely.

My friend and I were just at a networking event at the Benson and he said the cocktail waitress told him there was a rumor that Chappelle was playing a free show downtown. I called bullshit. We left the Benson to walk back to his car at the historical society where he works. After passing the Heathman Hotel we saw Dave Chappelle walking towards us with an unknown woman. We didn’t say anything at first, but my friend got the balls and turned around and asked him if he was in fact playing a free show tonight. Chappelle said, “yeah down there at that square at midnight”. I asked him if he had a permit and he said he asked the cops and they told him he didn’t need one. I also asked if he had sound materials and he said yes. We told him we’d be down there at midnight and that was it. He and the girl, who were both puffing down cigs turned and walked towards the Heathman. He seemed to be a cool dude, though.

There is nothing there that wasn’t already there earlier (on the webcam). There is no show, he’d definitely need a permit to host any kind of stand-up or gathering type event there and those who work with the city say there will be nothing going on at midnight there at the square.

According to one of the trainers at the 24 Hour Fitness in the Pearl, it’s definitely true. Yes, he’s been working out there all week. Supposedly, the reason why he’s doing it after hours is because the authorities wouldn’t let him do a no-holds bar show during the day.
However, I’m at the square, tons of people, five police officers from my vantage point, and nothing else besides the empty stage.

Here is a play by play of what happened..
thousands of people showed up. waited til 1245am. then everyone started leaving.
as i’m walking up broadway some guy runs by and says dave was coming.
everyone runs back.
he has a tiny ass speaker that you can’t hear one word from. says he will set up speaker system in 20 minutes.
45 minutes later. says pioneer shut off the power and needed to wait for a generator.
20 minutes later. no generator its too late now.. everyone needs to leave.

Stephanie more or less summed things up pretty well.
Dave really did show up and he had the best of intentions, but somehow he had no idea that word would spread so far and so quickly and wasn’t adequately prepared. Part of the reason he showed up so late was because he was attempting to wrangle better sound equipment of his own when he heard how large the crowd was, but at that time of night there wasn’t much he could do.
It was a real shame that he didn’t get to put the show on that he intended, but the fact is he showed up, waited things out with everybody else until the end and was genuinely apologetic that it didn’t work out.

Confirm everything Stephanie says, except I kind of enjoyed the spectacle of it. I could hear about half of the things he said and it was mostly logistical stuff like the PA will be here in 20 mins, thanks for coming down etc, but there were a couple little jokes. It was just cool to see/demonstrate what the new media is capable of. Everyone stayed cool, was helpful to each other and DC, and the cops just stayed by ready in case things got out of hand, but I didn’t even see a cop until I was leaving.

According to rumors it was in fact a rumor to begin with, but once Dave heard how many people wanted to see him he felt obligated. Whether it was intentional or it was a joke that he decided to make real, I give the guy credit for braving the Portlandites and showing up with no police, no back-stage entrance, and just working his way through a sea of bodies to get to the little stage that was already set up to try and make people happy. He deserves the credit for that if nothing else. Besides, you didn’t pay for the show, you went out and saw some drunk dumbasses get naked on top of Starbucks, and the cops were actually cool with the whole ordeal, lots of drinking and blunts being blazed but no one got busted or arrested. Cudos to whoever put this “shindig” on and got it to turn into something so big, and I respect Dave Chapelle more than ever for actually showing up. Thanks Mr. Chapelle!

What a strange night… he did show up an hour later with the little 10″ amp that about 5% of the audience could hear at any given time. I thought people were going to riot, there was a moment there before he showed up when things got a little tense. It certainly was a spectacle even if I couldn’t hear a damn thing he said. Sadly a bunch of people acted like fucking retards and were standing up on these flimsy plastic tables, and they were destroying the crap out of them. One dude did get served karmic justice though after we told him not to go up, having seen 4 break already, he blew us off, climbed up, and 10 minutes later took the umbrella stand/pole in his rigs as the table collapsed around it. Messed him up pretty good, what a tard.

So. 2:00am ish I manage to make my way onto the stage, w/ help from people, cause “I DO SOUND”, worked my way through a crowd, “club like”. I get onto a “ramp” but turns out it seemed like a collapsed wing. Couldn’t get further. DAVE was right there. Yelling through a battery powered VOX Amp! I saw people over there with wires and speakers….. Then word was that there was no POWER……..

Did you expect a bunch of boomers to be there? It was a shitload of rowdy twenty-somethings hanging out and having fun. I seriously doubt the artist was bummed out by the reception that he received for a fucking RUMORED event. He seemed to be psyched about the topless dancing on the Starbucks. Granted, I couldn’t hear shit, but the mood was perfect. Any real artist would welcome a reception like that to such an ill planned event.
