As you might have seen, we have been polling Twitter and Facebook for months on suggestions of where to eat, drink and go out. You can see all those here: Portland Bars, Food, Drinks & More

This week, we asked a question that Don Ortega suggested: Where are the best french fries in Portland? Potato Champion continues to have many fans. Kenny & Zuke's, Bonfire Lounge & Jade Tea House (Sellwood) also get multiple votes.

Authentic Belgian answer from Facebook:

The concept of Potato Champ comes very close to the original “baraque a frites” or “friet kot” in Belgium, country of origin and still best place for french fries. :-)

Pampelmoose & Future Sound's New Free Concert Series | Misissippi Studios

Pampelmoose was the first writing member of the Pipeline Posse other than myself. It was a good time as he is one of the best writers on the music industry. He classed this joint up in 2007 and I am sure this new FREE music series at Mississippi Studios will be very well done.

Free Downtown Concert in Portland: The Big Busk | July 18

July is the gift that keeps on giving in Portland with all these events. Saturday will be no exception. First, there is Sand in the City & the Portland International Beer Fest…and now, the Big Busk with possibly 25 music acts in downtown Portland throughout the day. I received an email some weeks back about this and asked the founder what was this all about.

His response:

There's no pretension to it. I got the idea one night, posted an ad onBusking Hawthorne Craigslist the next, and then it became a thing. The people that were into it were really into it, for various reasons of course but mostly for the reasons that make this festival different from others — being decentralized (no stage, no audience) and invasive (every corner is a stage, everyone is the audience), publicized (media mentions and other promotions) but insiderey (you could “wander into it” just by being downtown), and so on.

Yeah, it's an experiment. Busk and bust are different by Read the rest of this entry »

Singlelicious PDX Begins Tonight @ Studio X

Marjorie Skinner over at the Portland Mercury covered Singlelicious earlier this month.

From “Meet, Mingle, and Sweat“:

You might remember Studio X, the super-cool, under-the-radar gym owned by Tim Irwin, which I wrote up when they offered a free fitness program for un- or under-employed Portlanders (who reportedly found great success, I might add). They're at it again, but this time they're helping out a different kind of need via workouts: dates. Continue article on Mercury here.

I received the following press release yesterday evening and it begins tonight. Perhaps you will see Pipeliners sitting on the park benches of Bonfire when you come and go. You are welcome to have a beer with us if you are feeling too healthy. :)

In their fifth album release, Portland grown ensemble, The Decemberists, are breakingthe_decemberists modern ground by doing something very basic: telling a story.

The Hazards of Love (released in May) describes the life of a woman named Margaret and all she encounters. From her one true love; to a shape shifter; to a forest queen.  Like any good story, it has protagonists and heroes. And like any good story, its excitement perches you on the edge of your seat.

Frontman Colin Meloy devised the concept for the album after, according to a press release, he found a copy of Anne Brigg's 1966 EP titled The Hazards of Love. The lack of a title track on the EP peaked Meloy's interest, and he soon began composing one of his own. The idea, however, grew into an entire album following the story line and seventeen beautifully crafted tracks who weave together in the most natural way.  The rest Read the rest of this entry »

Dave Chappelle in Pioneer Square: Daily Stank Image Bank

Video: Dave Chappelle in Portland, Oregon | Pioneer Square

Dave Chappelle
Pioneer Square

July 14/15 2009

It is a bit dark. I wish I had better video skills, but this is about as close as you could get to Chappelle. This is as he was leaving Pioneer Square.

Luckily, he came through..so there ya go. Unfortunately, he had a speaker so small that no one could really hear him.  Apparently the power needed for sound is cut off at the Square at midnight.

I never heard what he said, but hopefully someone out there has video and pics and can tell us. Email us @ pdxpipeline@gmail with it.

Videos: place them in our Vimeo Portland video group here.
