Survival of the Illest Tour with Slick Rick, Rahzel, The Beatnuts

Rahzel Iron Man

80's babies beware: This could be one of the livest hip hop shows to embrace a Portland stage 2009 has witnessed. In a well-rounded representation of the golden era — that brief but saturated and glorious time in hip hop's infancy when emcees told bed-time stories, could simultaneously beat box a song's melody and chorus and a group could maintain unity past their initial 15 minutes of fame — the Survival of the Illest tour hits the cavernous Roseland stage this Friday representing three out of five New York's boroughs, grimy lyrical tactics and neck cracking beats.

Sponsored in part by PDX Hip Hop, Rockstar energy drink, Lunatik clothing, non-profits SEI (Self Enhancement Incorporated) and the Oregon Food Bank, the tour enters the ring with a 3-round K.O. promise, showcasing English-accented (the country, not the language), bling and eye patch donning Slick Rick (fingers are crossed he performs Ricky classics like "La Di Da Di" and "Children's Story"), master of impressive throat noise techniques Rahzel (fingers are crossed that he covers Aaliyah's "If Your Mother Only Knew") and South America's most wanted duo JuJu and Psycho Les as The Beatnuts (here's to their sing-a-longs "No Escaping This" and "Off the Books").

The concert will also make space for the following featured artists: Read the rest of this entry »

Where To Watch USA vs Honduras (CONCACAF Gold Cup) In Portland | July 23

From Yahoo Sports:

"This is a very good national team," Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda said Wednesday as his team practiced at Soldier Field. Read more here…

You need to get off work early and head to one of these spots to watch it (starts 4PM). This is now THE LAW of Thursday.

Pipeline Pick: Tanker Bar, 4825 SE Hawthorne

I watched the US play Brazil here and even though that did not turn out as well as hoped, it was a good time & they had a full bar at 11AM on a Sunday. They have some great beers on tap (4 Ninkasi) and if you want to try something new–They also have the largest amount of cans of any bar in Portland. Probably have around 50 different beers and some you likely have not seen before.

Tim/Tanker bar owner texted me earlier and said they will have happy hour 3-8PM, followed by Sports Trivia and a DJ starting at 9:30.

Basically, you should just plan to live at Tanker bar tomorrow.

More after the break... Read the rest of this entry »
