Portland's Old Town Block Party + Hung Far Low Sign Re-Erection | September 12
September 8, 2009 — PDXPIPELINESeptember marks the last month of many of Portland's big street parties thanks to oncoming rainy season. The Hung Far Low sign was taken down last year leading to a bit of a freak out amongst some Portlanders. We can't lose our famous penis joke sign, so thanks to twelve grand in tax dollars it's back…and with a big block party to match.
I've heard a pretty sweet surprise musical guest not listed below (Update: Lifesavas). I'm not allowed to say who that is, but if you like the hippy-hop, you will be in for a treat.

The Old Town Family proudly presents the first annual…
The Old Town Block Party is happening September 12th, 2009. City Center Parking lot, located on NW 5th av., between Couch and Davis. 3pm-10pm, all ages, free.
The concept for the Old Town Block Party first took form around the desire to re-hang the neighborhood's historic Hung Far Low sign; a sign for a defunct restaurant that was deemed a public safety hazard. After coming together behind the common cause of historical importance, the creative juices starting flowing. How could an event come about tto both celebrate the history of Old Town/Chinatown while showcasing the burgeoning creative community? The answer came naturally: a block party, highlighting the local businesses and agencies in the neighborhood, complete with live music, art, food and drink.
Each business will set up a booth inside of the city center parking lot (located on NW 5th av., between Couch and Davis). Companies are taking their booths and turning them out. With concepts ranging from pop-up retail spaces, to miniaturized kitchens, from live art studios to an all out yard sale. We aim to take the services offered often behind closed doors in Old Town out in the open air, allowing for people of Portland to see what our neighbor is doing.
This year's contributing businesses include:
Someday Lounge/Backspace, The Fix, Ace Hotel, eROI, Cravedog, Spectre, The Goldsmith Lofts, Compound, Upper Playground, Hecklewood, Davis St. Tavern, Ping, Old Town Computers, Floating World Comics, Portland Mercury, PDC, Trimet, and the list keeps growing…
With music from:
Yacht, May Ling, M64. Rev Shines, DJ Kez, Dundiggy & Matt Nelkin

The full cost of the re-erection is closer to $40k with $18k being raised through donations. We are still working to raise the rest of that 18k. Thee old-school old-town punx — Satyricon rockers, artists, weirdos — for many years, made Hung Far Low a second home. We are doing an ALL AGES benefit show tonight at Satyricon, to raise the rest of that 18k. 5 bands are playing, with Tres Shannon of Voodoo Doughnut / X-Ray Cafe as MC. Doors open at 8PM, show starts at 9PM. $10 suggested donation (sliding scale AFAIK.)

I had so hoped that it was a restoration of the real sign, not just a recreation. It’s OK, but it’s not the real thing.I I suppose you really can’t go home again.
