If you want to be involved in the universe-wide "Thrill the World" dance party, you need to start practicing. Sunday is your first chance.
Message from Thrill The World:
Here's the info on this year's Thriller Dance extravaganza. We are not quite ready to announce the location of the dance just yet, except to say that it's downtown. :)
The dance this year is October 24th, Saturday, at 5:30 pm. The date and time are, of course, chosen by the folks in Toronto who started Thrill the World and kick it into gear every autumn. We're holding the dance downtown: we are not yet announcing the location; we will send out more details on this later. We will have room for as many people who want to dance.
Learning the Thriller dance ahead of time is a must… with that in mind, there are two ways you can learn it:
–You can watch training videos on youtube. They are listed under youtube user name INESSENS; there are forty of them, numbered in order. They break the dance into eight sections and teach them individually, working up to the full Thriller.
–You can attend a practice!
We've scheduled five practices, all of them at Fremont United Methodist Church, 2620 NE Fremont, Portland. The dates we have scheduled are:
Sunday, October 4, 3-5 pm
Sunday, October 11, 6-8:30ish pm
Friday, October 16, 6-8:30ish pm
Sunday, October 18, 3-5 pm
Friday, October 23, 6-8:30ish pm
You do not need to practice ahead of time before coming to a practice, though it can help. We are happy to teach the full dance at these practices. You do not need to register for the practices… you can just show up! They are open to everyone.
We will also have a practice on the day of the dance, October 24th, at Conduit Dance Studio, 918 SW Yamhill St # 401.
This practice will not teach the dance in full; it will be for practicing. It runs from 2:30 to 4:30 that afternoon, giving folks an hour in between to schmooze, put on makeup, and head to our meet-point before the dance.
If you or someone you know wants to help but doesn't want to dance, please let us know! We can use a few volunteers on the day of the event.
If you are interested in passing out fliers to folks or putting them up in your neighborhood, email us and we'll get them to you!
Just like the last couple of years, we are asking for five dollar donations for participants and spectators (kids absolutely get to participate and watch for free) – ALL of the money raised will go to SMYRC, the Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center here in Portland. We will not turn anyone away for lack of funds.
