ACLU's Uncensored Celebration With Storm Large & More | October 1 @ Holocene

Posted by Kristen Imes

The last week of September marks the American Library Association is the 27th year celebratingACLU's Uncensored Celebration With Storm Large & More | October 1 @ Holocene Banned Books Week – a campaign that they designed to raise awareness of freedom of speech through celebrating challenged books and the value of free expression.  Have you ever even looked at the list of Banned Books? It's not only shocking, but also ridiculous (The Great Gatsby, The Catcher in the Rye, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Color Purple, Ulysses, Beloved, The Lord of the Flies, and 1984 are all in the top 10 “Banned or Challenged Classics“). Just think of your high school lit class without them…

In honor of Banned Books Week, the American Civil Liberties Union will be holding a Speech Extravaganza tonight, October 1st at Holocene. From 7:30-9:30 p.m., Portland's musical darling, Storm Large, will host a group of local authors including Chelsea Cain, Cheryl Strayed, Matt Briggs, and M. Allen Cunningham as they read from challenged books and share their personal stories of censorship. After 9:30 p.m., the musical segment begins (and First Thursday starts to look less appealing). DJ Anjali, DJ O.G. One, The Slants,  Mic Crenshaw, and The Family Gun will be performing.
