Company @ Jane, Portland

I didn't have time to research Company before I saw it last Thursday so I was surprised that it was so apropos to my life. It's about a 35 year old bachelor named Bobby (Robert-darling, Bobby-baby) and the different relationships he has with his married friends. Some want to find him that special someone, some want to scare him out of getting into a serious relationship, some just want him around so they don't have to be alone with their significant other. Man, I can relate and I know there are plenty of Portland bachelors and bachelorettes out there going through the same scenario. I recently attended a family wedding and got an earful of "So, are you seeing anyone special?" and "Let me introduce you to so-and-so". Not to mention the plentiful advice (or just venting) that I get from my married friends.

The amazing cast of Portland theater veterans did a great job with the sometimes challenging Sondheim score. I thought for sure Kelly Stewart (Amy) was going to turn blue and pass out when she sang "Getting married today." The song was so fast and packed with lyrics that Busta Rhymes would have found it hard to sing but she absolutely killed it. Stephanie Heuston (April) has an amazing, opera-trained voice that lit up the stage but didn't overpower like sopranos sometimes do. But the best part about this cast is that they didn't overact. I've watched and have been in many musicals and they are usually lousy with overacting but this cast is fantastic.

The set design and costuming were simple which also added to the "not too over-the-top" feel of the play. The backdrop, a giant view of New York City, lit up in different places so you knew you were in a different setting without having to sit through a 5 minute set change. Plus, it just looked neat. The color coordinated costuming let you know who was coupled with whom and set the single cast members (Bobby and the 3 ladies he "dates") apart nicely. I also appreciated that the choreography was simple and well done…although I did see a couple of jazz squares and some jazz hands in the mix, but I suppose it just wouldn't be a musical without jazz hands.

Company runs through November 8th so all you married folk should grab a single friend and head to the Winningstad theatre to check it out. Who knows…maybe you'll find Mr. or Mrs. Right in the seat next to you.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m.

$30-35

Just comment on this post and tell us why you should be the winner…and grab a little piece of Broadway right here in Portland! We will draw the winner on Monday morning and email you.

COMPANY is showing now through Nov. 8 at the Delores Winningstad Theatre in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA; 1111 SW Broadway/503.248.4335). A classic comedy all about love, dating and marriage, COMPANY follows the exploits of Bobby, a turning-35-year-old bachelor who has been unable — or more to the point, unwilling — to walk down the aisle.

The show follows five of Bobby's favorite couples and his relationship with his three current squeezes. Each interaction, in its quirky and hilarious fashion, increasingly inspires Bobby to tie the knot before it's too late. But will he? Come see for yourself!

I should win those tickets because I’m the last, knuckle-dragging, tattooed biker, hillbilly, toothless redneck, jerkwad you want to see at that theater!–I dare you!

  10.   SelfSabotage Says:

I’d like a pair of tickets so that I can take a boy I’m dating, laugh in all the inappropriate places, gauge his reaction, and see if I want to continue dating him.

  11.   Tony Says:

I LOVE live theatre and the fact that this is a local Portland production is a PLUS!!

I wanna see it because Sondheim’s a genius, it’s a great show, and I’ve never seen it onstage, just TV.

  16.   MsD Says:

    Because I never win anything.

  17.   Nancy Says:

I haven’t been to the theater since I got married over 25 years ago. I’ll take my husband, if he’ll go, or invite my own single friend for a nice evening on the town.

  18.   Nick Says:

    I need some amazing theater!

  19.   Julie Says:

I am reading this right now, and would love to be able to see it performed! It is excellent :o)

  20.   Kenzie Says:

I think I should win tickets to the show because I have always been in a relationship since I can remember and now that I am divorced at a time when all my friends are getting married and having kids (wich I do not have yet, or plan on anytime soon) I am finding myself trying to adjust to the “single” life. I think I could really relate to the characters and maybe gain some new perspectives.

  21.   Kimberly McClain Says:

I’d like the tickets because my birthday is at the end of October and it would be a great birthday present! Please!!

  22.   Donna Says:

I would like the tickets! It’s been forever since I’ve seen a play. (ok, I saw Wicked a few months ago) I miss it. I would love to support the arts.

  23.   Jill Says:

This is the epitome of my life!!! I try and support local theatre but have not had the funds as of late…and I truly miss the arts.

  24.   Jenn Says:

Help me, I am starved for culture!

  25.   Christina Says:

I know Stephanie Heuston!! We worked at Peet’s together. I would love to see her on stage. She has an AMAZING voice. Besides, what a great story to tell; sounds exactly like the life of a friend of mine. I would definitely take him.

  26.   Katie Says:

I would love to be able to go out and some see some great local theater for free. My boyfriend and I are on strict budgets with our less than stellar job situation and this would be a special treat.

  27.   Amy Daniewicz Says:

I really need to win tickets because I couldn’t afford to go to La Boheme :-( and I still can’t afford to go to Company. I wish i was one of the “Ladies who Lunch” but alas, I’m broke.

  28.   Alexis Champagne Says:

Because I’ve always been the behind the scenes girl and I finally deserve to sit with the audience!

  29.   Joan Says:

I miss NYC, but I want to stay in Portland. If I saw this play I could see the backdrop to New York and get to feel like I’m in both places at once!

  30.   Amy Says:

I would love to see “Company” both because I have been belting along to this and other Sondheim soundtracks for years and also because both of my grandmothers are now suggesting gently that I start looking for a husband so I don’t end up like my single aunt.

  31.   Cheryl Says:

Love live theatre, there is no substitute!

  32.   Angel Says:

I need to go to this… for the simple fact that the Oregonian called it “Delicious”. Haaa… it makes me “hungry” to see it. Plus, being on the opposite coast to NY, this is the closest I can get to Broadway without actually getting on a plane.

  33.   Abby Warren Says:

I would love to see all of these people win these tickets, but I would also like to win them for my friend! She just had to buy a bunch of college text books, then got her window broken into, then got a quite large parking ticket. This all resulted in no theater for her this year but she was so wanting to go. She does a lot of good in the community and I was just trying to return the favor through a taste of more community!

  34.   Josh Says:

Because I’ve never been to any stage shows in Portland and I’ve LOVE to take my BF who used to dance in musicals when he was younger! Give us a night on the town!!! ;)

  35.   Lorelei Says:

I would love to see this show! Thanks to limited funds, I haven’t had the opportunity to explore the Portland theatre scene and would love to start here. It has been far too long since I’ve seen a play and would love to have a single ladies night with one of my friends.

  36.   Cynthia Says:

I’m in a finance-created hiatus from theatre, music and dance productions for the next 2 years as I work my way though an initial license and Master of Arts in Teaching program at Marylhurst, University. No small feat after being out of school for over 30 years! My goal is to become an elementary teacher focusing on the literary arts so that I can instill a love of the written and spoken (and, yes, dramatized and sung) word into the lives and hearts of my future students. I would appreciate a cultural respite from my studies – and a reminder of the great joy I hope to bring to those students whose lives I touch with the magic of theatre. Thank you!

  37.   Daniel Says:

I should win because I love the theater, I’m a broke college student, and my birthday is November 8th.

  38.   bill g Says:

Having just moved to Portland from Chicago I’ve been having a blast comparing the two cities! Let me just say that beyond the PBR tall boys and skinny jeans in the SE I’m struggling to find many similarities. A theater experience on the other hand would make a great comparison! I’d even blog about it: http://www.billgalusha.com

    Cheers!

  39.   Brenna Says:

I should win because I’ve never been to the Winningstad Theatre and I would love to see a great show there!

  40.   cyndee Says:

I would like to win because I can relate to the fear of walking down the isle as I have been divorced for 16 yrs waiting for a miracle, “finding my best friend in a mate”. I gave up on the whole believing in marriage and for that matter love. I kissed a lot of frogs, had some pretty bad blind dates and for a very short glimps resorted to online dating to no evail, I stopped looking. Just when I had given up it happened, Miracles do happen, I found him and we have been togeather for 3 yrs saving up money to get married. I’ve recently been unemployed due to an injury at work so things are to tight to even consider buying theater tickets. Neither of us have ever been to a theater and are wanting to put more culture in our lives, meet new people, try new things, and live life to it’s fullest. I think this would be such a great event to share togeather and would love the consideration of winning tickets. Thank you

  41.   April Carter Says:

I would like to win tickest b/c I heart musicals big time. I am also 30 and single and will relate to this majorly. I have been online dating and that has it’s on funny stories in its self. I love theater but am on a tight budget and rarely get to go. thanks for the consideration (P.S. I did musical theater for many years and am going to start auditioning again!)

  42.   Tricia Saunders Says:

I would just LOVE to see this! The tkt. would be very much appreciated (only need one).

  43.   Jennifer Says:

Because I live to mock love and this looks to give some good material, even if “fictional.”
