Taking a cue from a legendary "strong woman," Portland's most powerful, most talented female circus artists have united under a common goal. Their mission? To blow audiences away with their amazing feats of strength, skill and beauty. Welcome to Circus Artemis, Portland's new all-women circus.

Circus Artemis will debut Oct. 16-18 with a variety show featuring the absolute finest female circus acts Portland has to offer, not to mention live music and a raffle of ridiculously fun prizes. And it will all take place in a unique, supportive atmosphere where women artists can shine.

Circus Artemis performers have trained with instructors from Cirque Du Soliel and the Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Montreal, taught at the renown San Francisco Circus Center, performed nationally and internationally — and keep Portland entertained while working locally with Do Jump! Extremely Physical Theater, A-WOL Dance Collective, The Nomadic Theater Company, Flamebuoyant Productions and more.

Our stellar lineup includes: A-WOL Dance Collective (aerial and dance), Brittany Walsh (contortion/hand-balancing), Daniela Steiner (single point trapeze), Heather Pearl (clowning), Indigo Tiewes (poi/acrobatics), Jack Lynn (clowning), Kricket Caffery (aerial/acrobatics), Kyoko Uchida (aerial fabric), Revolva (hula hoops), Shireen Press (aerial/poi/acrobatics), Shersten Finley (aerial straps), Sophie Bloch (music), Sy Parrish (single point dance trapeze) and Tera Zarra (clowning/comedy).

Men and boys, friends and babies, politicians and chimney sweeps — everyone in the city is invited to this family-friendly show. In fact, since all-ages shows are a rarity in Portland circus, we encourage you to bring the whole crew. Contributing further to this being a show unlike any other is the venue. The new A-WOL warehouse space (located at 10th and NE Flanders) is a circus artist's dream: beautifully huge, with lofty ceilings, and perfect for aerial work. With other circus events often happening in bars and clubs, artists may find themselves unable to rig gear or perform for kids.

"Circus arts are building momentum in Portland," says performer Kricket Caffery. "However, there are not very many locations which facilitate family-friendly shows, and even fewer that allow for this magnitude of aerial performance and variety of strong talents, abilities, and styles."

With so much to offer, Circus Artemis is a set to become a bright new light in Portland's entertainment scene. Grab a ticket to the October debut, and prepare to be dazzled and inspired!

Show times and dates: Friday and Saturday Oct. 16-17 at 8 p.m., Sunday Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.

Tickets: $10 advance, $15 door, kids up to 10 pay their age — purchase tickets at www.a-woldance.org

I am a descendent of PT Barnum. Actually he died in my arms. Maybe it’s just my genes, but I can pull a Mini-Cooper with my teeth.

AND I will bake pies for the ladies to enjoy after the show. I will juggle them first (the genes again).

When I first read this post all I could think about was this poem!!!

    Cloony The Clown
    By Shel Silverstein

I’ll tell you the story of Cloony the Clown
Who worked in a circus that came through town.
His shoes were too big and his hat was too small,
But he just wasn’t, just wasn’t funny at all.
He had a trombone to play loud silly tunes,
He had a green dog and a thousand balloons.
He was floppy and sloppy and skinny and tall,
But he just wasn’t, just wasn’t funny at all.
And every time he did a trick,
    Everyone felt a little sick.
And every time he told a joke,
Folks sighed as if their hearts were broke.
And every time he lost a shoe,
    Everyone looked awfully blue.
And every time he stood on his head,
Everyone screamed, “Go back to bed!”
And every time he made a leap,
    Everybody fell asleep.
And every time he ate his tie,
    Everyone began to cry.
And Cloony could not make any money
Simply because he was not funny.
One day he said, “I’ll tell this town
How it feels to be an unfunny clown.”
And he told them all why he looked so sad,
And he told them all why he felt so bad.
He told of Pain and Rain and Cold,
He told of Darkness in his soul,
And after he finished his tale of woe,
Did everyone cry? Oh no, no, no,
They laughed until they shook the trees
    With “Hah-Hah-Hahs” and “Hee-Hee-Hees.”
They laughed with howls and yowls and shrieks,
They laughed all day, they laughed all week,
They laughed until they had a fit,
They laughed until their jackets split.
The laughter spread for miles around
    To every city, every town,
    Over mountains, ‘cross the sea,
From Saint Tropez to Mun San Nee.
And soon the whole world rang with laughter,
    Lasting till forever after,
While Cloony stood in the circus tent,
With his head drooped low and his shoulders bent.
And he said,”THAT IS NOT WHAT I MEANT -
    I’M FUNNY JUST BY ACCIDENT.”
And while the world laughed outside.
Cloony the Clown sat down and cried.

*I want to go because when I was a little girl my mother continually told me she was going to give me away to the circus!

  20.   Callie Says:

Read about this online yesterday and seemed great! I work at all an-female owned and operated business and love to support other companies that are the same. Thanks!

  21.   Karin Says:

I am 45, and I have never been to the circus. If I’m going to pop the circus cherry, so to speak, I can’t imagine a better way to lose my circus virginity than to lose it to an All Woman’s Circus. Viva Feminism!

  22.   Claire Nevins Says:

Pick Me! My family was part of the circus in Vaudville, It is where my great grandma and great grandpa meet. Seeing these women in action will give me insight to my great grandmothers life. Thank you! Have a great day!

  23.   Moss Says:

I am really excited about circus arts, as an aspiring trappeze artist and tight rope walker. A pair of tickets to this show would be just the ticket to lighten up one of my worst weeks in a long while also.

  24.   Nikki Says:

I love circuses and women performers. I need a shot of circus fun in my life! Can’t wait to see this!
