From Goodfoot Lounge

Sat 12/26- BEN DARWISH'S AFROBEAT TRIBUTE to MICHAEL JACKSON, DJ DUNDIGGY
Calling all P.Y.T.s! Put on your dancing shoes for an Afrobeat concert inspired by Michael Jackson's music. Innovative Portland-based composer Ben Darwish will lead a ten-piece band as they interpret Jackson's songs using Afrobeat techniques popularized by Fela Kuti. The band features members of Commotion, with Tahirah Memory and Gretchen Mitchell on vocals, and master African drummer Neindow Mashud, who frequently performs with Obo Addy. Don't stop till you get enough! $10.

Wed 12/30- THE WAYDOWNS @ 9pm- The Waydowns invite you to join them for an evening of high-energy soul/jazz and a few drinks as we wind down ‘09.
$5.

Thu 12/31- Ã‚  NEW YEARS EVE w/ THE GOODFOOT ALL-STARS, SICK BAY DJ's @ 9:00pm
Usher the New Year in to the sounds of The GFAS, a collective of our favorite musicians from such bands as Leftover Salmon, The Headhunters, Everyone Orchestra, Triclops, Blue Cranes, The Motet and The Devin Phillips Band. Though mostly on the funky side, they dip their toes into a little bit of everything in their quest to keep bodies moving. The Sick Bay DJ's bring the heat with opening and break sets, as well as spinning all night long in the upstairs pub $1

Sat 1/2-  GARAJ MAHAL @ 9:00pm
This is music that attracts both musicians and dancefloor denizens — complex and inventive at its core, with a "shut up and listen" booty-moving exterior. Led by Blue Note Recording artist Fareed Haque (guitar) and anchored by supremely gifted and funky bassist Kai Eckhardt, GM's compositions thrill the mind while pushing the body. $12.

Wed 1/6-  RUBELLA GRAVES, BRASS CLOUDS, LINCOLN'S BEARD @ 9:00pm
An evening of roots-rock to start the weekend early. $5.

Thu 1/7- TAPWATER @ 9:00pm
Tapwater is a wildly eclectic and talented band that touches on everything from highly percussive brazillian music to rock, bluegrass and jazz. They've dubbed their music "world twang" with good reason! $6

From NW Film Center

Sunday, December 27, 5:00 PM
BRIGHTON ROCK
Part of the Film Center's British Noir series
Great Britain 1947
Director:  John Boulting

"The brilliant author Graham Greene provides the source novel and screenplay for this Dickensian glimpse into the underbelly of a typical British seaside resort, where sun, sand, and carnivals camouflage another town entirely. In run-down Brighton, the boardwalk is lined with pasty day-trippers and incompetent singing acts and patrolled by teenage Napoleon 'Pinkie' Brown (Richard Attenborough). With a choirboy's looks and a killer's cold stare, as alien to his fellow gangsters as he is to 'civilians,' Attenborough embodies a psychosis matched only by James Cagney in WHITE HEAT."—Pacific Film Archive. "One of the finest British thrillers ever."—Time Out, London.  (92 min.)

Please please let me go see the Roots. I am unemployed and couldn’t go otherwise. I have been living in Salem where there are few African Americans and I want to reground myself in the music I grew up with and start the year with some good funky music. I have one of their albums and love the song “How I got over.” I’m new to Portland and have never been to Roseland, but always wanted to. Besides, it will force me to ask someone out.
