Fertile Ground Creative Festival 2010 | January 22nd – February 2nd

Posted by Kimberly Gehl

This Friday marks the start of the 2nd annual Fertile Ground Creative Festival, a 10 day, city-wide celebration of new local works! Prepare to be delighted by this year’s line-up of over 50 projects and a dozen world premieres, spanning across a variety of genres and being presented by a very diverse group of talented (and hardworking!) Portland artists and organizations.

The festival was launched last year by the Portland Area Theatre Alliance (PATA) to promote the creation and development of new works, and to demonstrate that the ‘City of Roses’ “…truly is fertile ground for creativity, innovation and daring acts of performance”.

Fertile Ground differentiates itself from other “new works” art festivals by featuring projects that are right on the cusp of creation. This year’s collection of projects include:

Special Festival Events – Impromptu performances created just for the festival, to spark the audience’s imagination and get the creative juices flowing.

Fully Staged World Premieres – Premiere performances of over a dozen brand-new, fully-formed, ready for the stage projects.

Workshop Productions – In-progress productions whose creative teams warmly welcome audience input and participation, allowing the community to help shape the final product.

Staged Readings
– Informal readings of plays in the early stages of development that give audiences a sneak peak of new local works on the horizon.

“Down and Dirty at 12:30″ Box Lunch Reading Series – Casual box lunch reading that invites the audience to take a break from work in the middle of the day and escape into works-in-progress for an hour at a time. Bring your own lunch or purchase a box lunch at the Armory Café.

Late Night and The Hothouse – Late night comedy, poetry, theatre and pulp entertainment to satisfy the late-night crowd and those interested in works that are a little wilder and more experimental than the ones you can see earlier in the day.

As you can there are events to suit every whim and fancy!  Find full descriptions for each project, schedules, and buy tickets on site listing of the complete festival calendar.

Individual ticket prices vary from projects to project (ranging from Free to about $20 per show) and can be purchased individually at each show or venue or online by visiting the info page for that project on Fertile Ground’s site, but the festival is also offering a few options for how to save money while seeing more of the festival:

You can purchase a Festival ‘GrOw Button’ for $5, which will give you a $2-$5 discount on each single ticket (pays for itself after 1-2 uses!) to all festival affiliated events, as well as discounts for many local restaurants and businesses.

festival pass is $50 and includes admission to all participating Fertile Ground projects, including the late night “Hot House,” panel discussions and the “Down and Dirty at 12:30” lunchbox new work reading series, as well as the after hours parties. Buy the pass in person at any Festival project or buy it online here.
