World Cup starts tomorrow, although most parties around here in Portland start Saturday when the United States takes on England. We beat them last time we faced them in a World Cup…ok, it was 1950, but still..BOOYA…suck it England.

Watch World Cup Online:

If you have the cable, but are not near a TV, you can watch at ESPN360.

If you do not have cable, there are several (“illegal”) sources such as this one, this one, this one, this one, and this one where you will likely be able to catch games…probably non-US broadcasts.

Interesting fact: Oregon supplies grass seed for World Cup (from KGW)

Where to Watch World Cup in Portland, Oregon

There are going to be tons of bars showing the World Cup around Portland, Oregon. However, many of them will not be open until the later 11AM games or playing replays in the evening. The best way to find out is just to call. We have made some calls and visits though and have some picks for you…

Most Interesting: Director Park & Pioneer Square

Director Park is in downtown (815 SW Park Ave) and the newest park in Portland. They will have an outside viewing on Saturday, June 12, at 11 a.m ( United States takes vs England). Family friendly + BEER Garden & Timbers Army.

Pioneer Courthouse Square will show the World Cup final on Sunday, July 11, at 11 a.m. .

Pearl / NW pick – Blitz Pearl: 110 Northwest 10th Avenue

Blitz will be open at 7AM on Saturday and during many days of World Cup action. They will have a party to celebrate the US game with drink/food specials. They also have MANY screens. (blitzbarpdx.com for more info)

More picks after break including SE, SW, North, NE

SE/NE Pick #1 – Beulahland: 118 Northeast 28th Avenue

Sure, Beulah is in NE officially, but it is basically the SE’s main hangout for World Cup. They will be opening at 6:30 AM every day for matches including tomorrow/Friday for the opening matches of South Africa and France. They have a 100 inch HD screen and  a couple others in both rooms. they also have some extensive info of times/matches here: http://beulahlandpdx.com/world-cup-2010

Menu/Specials: Breakfast until 1PM every day and beer specials (that will correlate with teams/countries as play progresses to later rounds).

SE/NE Pick 2 Bakery Bar: 2935 Northeast Glisan Street

Also slightly in NE, Bakery bar will show all games except those 4/4:30am ones. Open at 6:30 for 7am starts…open at 7am for all 7:30am starts. 3 flat screens – all in HD: a 50″, a 40″, and a 37″
Regular menu and drinks: full license for cocktails and draft beer for the duration of the tourney.

SW / Downtown Pick: Rialto Poolroom, 529 Southwest 4th Avenue

This was commented on Facebook and confirmed by Rialto: “Rialto opens st 7am fr-sun for world cup.serving $2.50 well drinks 7am-11am and breakfast including steak, eggs and bloody Mary for $8.” They also have 6 50 inch screens and 3 large projectors. rialtopoolroom.com

North Pick: Lompoc’s 5th Quadrant, 3901 North Williams Avenue

Haven’t found a place in North that is opening early for the games, but 5th Quadrant is a nice place with nice beer and will be opening at 10:30AM on Friday and Saturday of this weekend for games. They also have drink specials ($1 off wells, $3.25 pints) and 3 TVs, one that is 60inch HD.

MORE PLACES:

There are a lot more places and you can see Dave’s has a list here.

Suggestions from Twitter and Facebook:

  • Richtersf: I’m just happy the ONE TV at the Horse Brass will FINALLY be turned on. I wonder if it still works?
  • Potestio: piaza italia and cafe umbria. Forza Italia!
  • Liam Madigan: bakery bar, prost, horse brass are the one that i can think of, off the top of my head
  • Terry Gentry: I really like Piazza Italia. It’s a truly soccer restaurant with good food. I understand they are going to have all the games and a buffet breakfast for the early morning games. Not a huge place so I suspect it might get packed with all the people that don’t want to watch games at a sports bar like Blitz. I may watch some of the games at Director’s park where they are going to have a beer garden for the US-England game and the timbers are going to announce the new logo for next year’s mls jersey.
  • Terry Hallett-Lyman: Rialto opens st 7am fr-sun for world cup.serving $2.50 well drinks 7am-11am and breakfast including steak, eggs and bloody Mary for $8.
  • Shawn Alan Boomer Flack: I would say O’Malley’s off SE Foster…just made the WW top 100 bars, and the same issue the top 5 most spacious. They also have, a 42″ HD, and a huge pull down projection in the back. Great micro selection, and awesome brick oven Pizza! Not saying it cause i work there either.
  • Darci Doodle: Skybox is good, too.

If you have recommendations of places, please leave a comment with details.

Thirsty Lion on SE 2nd & Ash is showing every single game. The menu is English pub (ugh) but quite a few people are there every day and into it. Thanks for the list, Julian. (Futsal is an offshoot of indoor soccer with small fields, a smaller less bouncy ball, and a handful of players per side. It emphasizes quickness and foot work.)
