50+ Portland First Thursday Events

First Thursday @ Everett Station Lofts, Portland, OregonPortland's monthly First Thursday event is tomorrow. Time is certainly flying by right now with all the great summer events. There are over 50 (probably 100) galleries having openings this month.

We have a very large list below thanks to Sequential Art Gallery (328 NW Broadway) & Rich Vail Mackin. They compile an email called the "[h]IT LIST" of events every month. You can join it by emailing them @ sequentialart @ gmail dot com. We have reproduced much of it below with permission.

This Month at Sequential Art Gallery:
Sequential Art Gallery is excited to again present local artist Katy Ellis O'Brien in her second solo exhibition with the space. “The Kilkenny Cats” is a story in pictures involving cartoon cats, boy scout camp, folk music and whiskey. Through a series of narrative paintings, the viewer's imagination is invited to explore the sometimes silly, sometimes sad story of the tumultuous relationship between a pair of musicians. The show opens First Thursday, August 5, and runs every Saturday through August.

Katy Ellis O'Brien grew up drawing cartoon animals in Forest Grove, Oregon. Wielding a degree in sequential art from The Evergreen State College, she now resides in Northeast Portland. In addition to being a painter and cartoonist, she's an editor for the Stumptown Underground zine collective, and she teaches children's workshops at Cosmic Monkey Comics.

ART EVENTS NOT TO BE MISSED!

“We Agree: A Crisis in Common” at SEA Change Gallery | Justseeds and Taring Padi
On display will be two large blockprints, one made by the Portland-based members of the Justseeds Artist Cooperative, and the other by members of Taring Padi, an artist cooperative from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The two prints, each measuring three feet by nine feet, are bold, graphic depictions of the impact of the natural gas industry and its satellites on the landscape and peoples of both sides of the Pacific. The prints were designed and printed collaboratively, with the help of generous funding from RACC and Work for Art. Other artworks by Justseeds and Taring Padi will also be on display.

This is not only set to be a great show for the show's sake, but it's also the the third to the last show at this amazing space- where the curators not only show art, but they host a number of community events and have free produce Mondays. Make sure you say your goodbyes- even if you need to say hello first!

The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb's Book of Genesis” at the Portland Art Museum. You probably don't want to read the whole book in the museum, but worth seeing the originals in person. Rather than me babble on and on, read what our friends at the Portland Mercury had to say.
