From our partners Portland Saturday Market:
Stumptown Staycation
It has become increasingly popular across our great United States for the theme "Staycation" to ring out loudly. What better way to experience Portland then purposely vacationing as a tourist. We went down to Portland Saturday Market for inspiration and compiled 5 easy steps to help you become a tourist in your own hometown.
What's the best thing about being a hometown tourist? It's so easy to do. Get away without going away! Planning to get away can be a challenge these days, with both time and money at a premium for many would-be travelers. Fortunately, there is a way to satisfy wanderlust that is easy on both. Discover what others come to see in your hometown. Explore the affordable, eclectic and unsurpassed mix of dining, shopping, history, art and nature that is Portland — on your
own or with your family.
Ask someone about the visitor attractions in their hometown and they might well tell you that they have never visited that place. It seems many of us take the place we grew up in for granted. Why the rush to visit somewhere else? We have the rest of our lives to call in and pay a visit. In a worldwide global recession and with our carbon footprints becoming ever more noticeable, it makes sense to check out what your local environs have to offer.
Get Back to Nature. Natural beauty of awe-inspiring diversity is all around you in the greater
Portland area. From Multnomah Falls, to the wonders of Mt. Hood to the many lakes and rivers, nature beckons.
For a more urban park experience, visit the Portland Rose Gardens, Lan Su Chinese Garden or Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
Take a Step Back in Time. Experience Portland's proud history. Stroll through Old Town Chinatown and along the historic waterfront district. Take time to read the historical plaques and plan a stop at the Oregon Maritime Museum (www.oregonmaritimemuseum.org).
Family-Fun Events. Portland is very kid friendly. From ball games at PGE Park, to roller skating at Oaks Park, there is something for every "little one" in the family. Waterfront Park plays host to many festivals like; Cinco de Mayo, Rose Festival, Portland Bridge Pedal,
and Portland Saturday Market. The fun is in experiencing your child's joy as everything is new and exciting for their first time. They can really soak in the experience like a thirsty traveler.
Biking with your children is a great way to spend quality time with them and instill the importance of exercising and educating
them about environmental issues like carbon footprints.
Tantalize Your Taste Buds. Food is always a key element in the success of any vacation, and Portland restaurants offer the
variety needed to ensure memorable excursions. Food carts, ever more popular, line streets offering a trip around the world in international cuisines.
Shop Until You Drop. Like food, shopping is one of the guilty pleasures of being on vacation, and shopping in Portland provides hours of browsing
pleasure for the whole family downtown in the malls and trendy boutiques. A fun trip to Saturday Market will net you unique and personable gifts.
Local citizens are our most valuable tourism ambassadors. ‘Being a tourist in their own hometown' affords county residents the opportunity to experience our tourism assets first-hand so that they can share their experience and knowledge with friends, family and visitors from outside the area.

Loving the market as my wife and I do – we have not yet had ONE chance to get there yet this season. We were too busy planning our wedding – but are now happily married and finally have time for some fun!
Because the Taste of Poland tastes the best in Portland.
Because Saturday at the market is a great way to start the weekend. We love to samples all the cheeses and it would be great to finally take one home!
DD went with friends last weekend and I didn’t get to go b/c of work. Would love to go and have a gyro…
I love loading up on fresh produce at the market would spend the gift cert purchasing way too many yummy loaves of Daves Killer bread!
I love the Saturday Market for the local meats, fruits & veggies and the musical entertainment as well as the people watching! $25 would be well spent by me! :)
I love the Oregon Soap! It’s the only soap I use. Buy me some soap!
I will win this certificate and eat my weight in elephant ears.
I haven’t been to the market in years but the best part was watching Elvis get down!
Love planning meals for the week and buying fresh and local at the Portland Saturday Market!
I love the Market because it’s teen-friendly, I can meet my friends there and have a great time. The food’s awesome and I always love the events they have there.
I’m new to town and I’ve never been to the Saturday Market! I’d love to check it out.
Because I have yet to visit Saturday Market this summer! I need to go and eat yummy food and stock up on fun trinkets!
I will forever be a hometown tourist. I came to Portland for a job. The job is long gone, but I am still here. I love this city I will forever call home, and having $25 to spend while unemployed would just be icing on the cake.
One of my favorite ideas has been the Staycation! It’s hard to appreciate your own city without guests to host, and I’ve still got a lot of sights to check off my list! As for the Saturday Market, my favorite thing is watching the kids play in the fountain & the booth that makes crafts with metal utensils : )
I would definitely by the clay garden gnomes with the faces of my family! The guy who does the gnomes does a great job and it’s a unique idea.
Oops! that’s buy, not by.
With meat-eating plants, tibetan fabrics, spoon art, and didjeridoos, who could ask for more?
There are so many talented vendors and I have never been able to buy anything. I would love to support the local economy!
I’d really like to hit Saturday Market and pick up some of the great tie dyes that Eric makes. Pick me, pick me! :)
I’ve managed to get to the market twice this summer, though once was just to pick something up from an artist for my sister. I really want to buy a wind chime from the Spoon Guy! I collect wind chimes, and his stuff is so cool! I love supporting local businesses…Please, pick me. :)
A hop, skip and a jump from the max, I’m in love with the peaches so fresh and fragrant, I smell them before I see them, the dill so healthy and flavorful it kicks our potato salad into high gear days later and overwhelmed by the array of Dave’s bread flavors!
My boyfriend was ogling some T-shirts there but passed because they were too expensive (for us, anyway) – I’d love to surprise him with one for our upcoming anniversary!
I would love to win the gift card! My best friend is living in England, and her birthday is coming up, I have to send her something Portland-y, right?
I love to stock up on some fresh produce and some yummy dave’s killer bread! I sure hope I win! :)
*I* have yet to hit the Portland Saturday Market this year, and – maybe this cancels out the Staycation idea – my parents will be visiting soon and *they* want to go too. It’d be swell if I could bulk up their growing bag of local swag with a Saturday Market gc!
fresh ‘n local!
I just haven’t been in so long, being in Vancouver these days but I have friends coming in and it would be a great place to go with them!
I ahve been going to the Saturday market since I was a kid, love it!
I love buying handmade soap there- it’s the only place I’ve been able to find a Dragons Blood scent. I’m a bit of a soap floozy, so it would all go to fun bath stuff.
I love to people watch at Saturday Market.
Would be heading straight to the food vendors with my sweetie…and enjoy some time out of the kitchen (even though I love to cook).
Because it makes for a great weekend!
I’m taking some time off work to celebrate my 30th birthday, but due to lack of funds (husband unemployed for over a year) it’s definitely going to be a staycation celebration!
We love going to the farmers market, picking up some yummy food (pine state!) and getting fresh fruits and veggies.
A trip to the farmers market with a gift certificate would be a wonderful way to start of the birthday staycation!
I haven’t been in 20 years !If I win I can afford to see what’s new and buy some goodies!
Because Food + Outside = Happy.
An especially great way to spend a Saturday.
I’m finally done with school! I’ve spent all summer with my head in the books. I’m ready to get out, enjoy the market, and be part of the community again!!
Because in our society, where ‘modern conditions of production prevail, all life presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles.’ Every commodity is the same – an old wolf wrapped in new sheep clothing. Active human agency produces lively markets such as Portland’s, that strive to break the monotony of this soporific haze we find ourselves in. Markets bring both the street and people alive. Public situations such as this encourage people to ‘rethink what they once thought,’ break through the spectacle and see the person behind it all.
I LOVE SATURDAY MARKET!!!
have not been for awhile and need to get a wedding gift for a wedding THIS Saturday evening…winning a gift card would sure help me with my shopping!
I love the Saturday Market, but regretfully, I haven’t been there in years. I now have 2 boys who haven’t had the experience of Portland’s Saturday Market. This would give me the perfect excuse & opportunity to show them some of the great Portland traditions that we have.
Why do I like the market?! Because I support local, Oregon business. Everything else is second place.
Fresh local fruits and veggies! Im craving to make a summer veggie pesto pasta dish!!
just moved to the area and have heard wonderous things about the sights, sounds, smells, and yummy foods of the Saturday Market!
I would use this to feed the street performers that are obviously under-nourished, and an elephant ear for this obviously over-nourished non-performer.
I love buying local and really want some fresh flowers at home this weekend. Plus, I’m in town for once this weekend and havent made it to the downtown market once this summer!
What sounds better after a long week at work than a nice day wondering through the market with lunch along the waterfront? I love supporting the local business and artists. My nieces birthday is coming up, and I’m sure I would find the perfect gift at the Saturday Market!
I love the feeling of all the people from all over town coming to the market.
It’s super fun to go to the Saturday Market and pretend to be a tourist. Great energy!
I would buy one of those dinosaur shirts!
Simply because it is AMAZING!
I love all the unique things sold and elephant ears yum :)
I want to get a special present for my mother’s birthday. Money is tight right now and I’d love to support the local economy and purchase a unique gift for her.
That’s like twelve elephant ears. That would make me very, very happy. Also, you’re right – it does seem touristy. It would be nice to go downtown and see what local artists and craftspeople are up to.
I love Gabriel’s bakery and would pig out on her cinnamon rolls.
Every Saturday. 25$ = 3 Rogues, 2 Gyros
ahhh….been going to Saturday Market for 15 years. But as of the last year and a half, I’ve been experiencing “under” – employment, and I haven’t been able to shop there. A $25 gift cert would truly make my day!
Thanks a million! Lisa
I love the Saturday market because in a minute location it expresses all walks of life that lie within Portland. When looking for a gift it expresses part of me and the city that I live in making a gift that lasts forever!
I take off 2-3 weeks every July to just spend a summer in Portland. It is the very best time of summer in Portland – and I go everywhere I miss while it’s raining or I’m sitting in front of a computer. That includes Saturday Market – a day eating and browsing and buying just one thing. I like to see if I can find something for everyone on my Xmas gift list at Saturday Market – and it works! I could use that $25 for my fall Portland tours! I’ve lived here 38 years and I still can’t believe I live in such a beautiful, fun place.
Visiting Portland Labor Day weekend and looking forward to the Saturday market. Hoping to find a little something to remember my time in Portland.
The Saturday Market is a handmade artist’s mecca. It’s a place filled with art and crafts and hope and dreams and unicorn tears. Just walking among the booths filled with the results of hard work, artistic minds and fairy magic bring warm fuzzies to my heart and tears to my eyes. Unfortunately, because hubby thinks we have more important things to spend our money on like food and mortgage and blah, blah, blah, I’m not able to buy any lovely things I see at the Saturday Market to fill my house with art and to support local artists. So, I think the only answer is for me to receive this lovely gift card so I can finally put some real art in my house. Oh, and did I mention that my Birthday is coming up? What better present then art, hmm? Other then my own personal robot to do my bidding, that is.
Because My girlfriend and I fully embody the staycation lifestyle. It has been a rough summer spending half of it unemployed, yet it has been an amazing one in terms of activities by visiting all that Portland has to offer. We have a staycation almost every weekend. My girlfriend loves the saturday market and we often visit, yet never have the extra $$ to get anything. We recently found out she is pregnant and I would love to be able to finally get her some a comfortable wrap or local made dress for her to enjoy as she and I go through this experience.
i’d love a gift certificate to spend on some local goods. gotta support the locals…
I love the Saturday Market so much. It would be awesome to get to purchase a beautiful meditation seat finally! The market represents all the amazing things about Portland. I’d love to win this!
Love the saturday market. COuld always use the cash to buy my family some cool gifts
I just moved to Portland, and have heard so much about the market and can’t wait to taste a variety of their food particularly their massive Gyros that friends have been raving about! :) I’m a total fat kid at heart. That cash could be awesome to find some things that would jazz up my apartment more!
Because I moved to Portland a year ago and I still haven’t made it to the Saturday Market yet! What the heck?! It was one of the first events/places I ever experienced in the city of Portland, about three years ago, and I thought it was fantastic. Can’t believe I haven’t gone there since I moved here.
I like the idea of supporting local artisans and entrepreneurs at the Saturday Market. So many great hand-made, custom wares as well as authentic food vendors can be found in one location – with a myriad of unique talents and flavors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
i try to get to sat market regularly. i love the selection of clothes, the food (and the junk food!), and i enjoy the glass work. all the artists bring smiles to my experience!
I love the Saturday market!! The last time I was there (which was last weekend), I was able to buy some fabulous gifts. The Saturday market is the best place to buy wonderful handmade gifts and support local artists.
My wife needs shopping therapy, It’s been awhile.
Mmmmm! Gyros and Rogue beer! I love those happiness gourds, too! Perfect stop on the way to Art in the Pearl…
Hurray for the Farmer’s Market! I love the music!
