Drawing on the sparkling legacy of the best of 80s and 90s pop, New York City indie pop group The Pains of Being Pure at Heart update the timeless noisy pop template with a thoroughly modern viewpoint and a very distinctive, playful personality. There is something instantly identifiable about a Pains tune, and it is the essential “rightness” of their records that has captured the attention of pop fans around the world.

The band had quite a 2009, and 2010 is shaping up to be even better. They released their self-titled debut in February 2009 to universal acclaim, racking up features in magazines like Spin, Rolling Stone and NME, earning Best New Music status from Pitchfork, and touring the US and Europe non-stop. They began 2010 with a month-long tour of Japan, New Zealand and Australia, and this summer, they released a fantastic new single entitled “Say No To Love”. It's a big step forward for the band, combining The Pains' now-trademark youthful energy and infectious song craft with a more considered approach to the studio.

Glasser is the one-woman orchestra of Cameron Mesirow. Her debut album, Ring, is a singular work. It moves like the wake of a small boat in a still lake: each song its own, but leading to, and becoming, the next. Glasser entered public consciousness in 2009 with her debut EP, Apply, on True Panther, and a UK-only 12″ on the Young Turks label. The intimate, luxurious music resonated widely, despite being made by Cameron, alone and in airplanes and shoe stores, on Garage Band. Her EPs and live shows earned her attention from producers and opening tour slots with the XX, Jonsi, and Delorean.

The New York Times said “these are beautiful Two Shows Saturday Night @ Holocene: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart & Booty BASSmentsongs, both sweet and abstract, deeply felt and anodyne.” Somehow, in Glasser's efforts to make sense of her world, she has made an album with the universal lure of both a lullaby and a hymn. 20.   Michael Wood Says:

Growing up in New York City I knew lead singer Kip Berman from playing shows with them. They used to open for us. Back then they called themselves “???” as in three question mark symbols. It was confusing and stupid, and most people thought they were ripping off the band !!!.

Well, despite that I felt bad for the guys ’cause they sucked so bad contrary to us, who were well on our way to getting a major record label deal. Back then our band was called The Pangs of Being Pure at Heart. One night I remember giving Kip a demo of some new amazing stuff we had been working on. I told him not to lose or copy it or show it to anyone else, as it was my only copy.

I never saw him or any of the band ever again. My band dissolved shortly after that fateful day, as that tape was my only copy and having it stolen panged my heart so much I found it hard to keep up the relentless schedule of a touring band.

Then on April of last year I was watching Carson Daly and a few familiar faces appeared on screen calling themselves a slightly different name that my band (Pains instead of Pangs). I watched in horror as they proceeded to play full fledged songs based on the style and melodies in the demo tape that I had regretfully handed Kip years ago.

Now these guys are the newest “indie darlings” and I want my just dues. I need to go to this show to settle the score between me and Kip and his bandmates once and for all!

  24.   Jackie Says:

I should get to see The Pains of Being Pure at Heart because I don’t judge bands by their terrible whiny emo names.

  25.   Dot Says:

o.m.geez. Let’s not kids ourselves, I really just want to shake my booty, and since I have no basement, I pretty much need to go to this dance party. Really, it would be a public service.

  26.   Shin Says:
