About Mars Retrieval Unit: MRU CD Release Party:
MRU has been lighting up the Portland and surrounding jam and groove circuit with its unique blend of prog rock and groove. Lead singer and saxophonologist Chelsea has total freedom for her vocal and instrumental melodies to float above the churning, relentless rhythm section of Joel and Murray, darting in and out of Rob and Joshua's web of guitar and synthesizer.
Drawing influences from such diverse acts as Herbie Hancock to Pink Floyd, Parliament-Funkadelic to Rush, Yes, Frank Zappa, Phish, Steely Dan, and Talking Heads (to name a few), their original music has more of a composed feel than a “song” vibe, while the band maintains the looseness of improvisation and the desire to explore the structure of the songs.
In 2009 MRU headlined numerous summer festivals to the delight of thousands. In the spare time between those performances, he band is finalizing its debut studio recording for release in late fall of 2009.

Every time I heard about problems with the Mars Rover, I got a little sad. I wondered how Rovie was doing… When he died, I was heart broken. I’m glad to see that Mars Retrieval Unit has chosen that name to, presumable, better educate us about the needs to bring our heroes home, even if it increases mission costs by 80%. I would really appreciate the tickets so that I can tell them how much I feel for the Public Service Announcement they are doing by keeping that name.

When I first saw MRU at the 45th st pub in beavertron, I knew that they would be destined for bigger things. The Crystal Ballroom is the top of the heap for pdx, congrats to Rob, Chelsea, Joel, Joshua, and whoever their new drummer is, (miss you Murray) And see y’all Sunday Night!

Been a fan of MRU since a long time. Makes me really happy to know that they are finally releasing a CD. I would love to be a part of this occasion but for me it’s either free tix or no go!

Free tickets are great, but the $5 ticket price is amazing deal..one of the cheapest ways to see a show at the Crystal with three amazing bands!
