New Orleans' Queen Diva of Bounce returns to Holocene!

Big Freedia is the recognized “Queen Diva” of Bounce Music in New Orleans, where she performs six or more times a week in various venues throughout the city. Bounce Music is an original urban music rising up from the intimate and fun-loving nature of the New Orleans housing projects which dominate the city's street culture, and Freedia performs a derivative of Bounce reserved for self-proclaimed “Sissies” that has risen to prominence in recent years and features explicitly gay and cross-dressing musicians and themes.

Since 2009 Freedia has begun traveling outside the city regularly with her dancers and live DJ, Rusty Lazer, playing to audiences on the East and West Coast alongside (or onstage with) artists such as Spank Rock, Galactic, Ninjasonik, Japanther, Monique and many more.

Oh, I would love to go! I first heard about this act through Diplo’s coverage. I have great interest in how music breaks down barriers, and as a queer and genderqueer individual who writes about gender, sexuality, and music, I would :delight: in this show.

  5.   hannah Says:

Going to a show like this would revive me really! I spent time in New Orleans and it took hold of my soul so much that I long for any inkling of it’s flavor… I haven’t seen her but i bet i could shake a booty to it with heart!

  10.   Emily Willard Says:

  11.   John Says:

I was so unbelievably excited to rock out with Big Freedia when she was scheduled to be at Holocene in Septemeber, and so bummed at the cancellation. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this for soooo long.. I NEED TO BE THERE! I promise that I won’t stop dancing until the lights come on and I am physically removed!

  12.   Corey Says:

I need to see some azz everywhere!

  13.   Corey Says:

  14.   Eri Suzuki Says:

Big Freedia is so off the wall – the music is ridiculously fun and catchy. Would love to see her live!! Plus, I love anything real New Orleans style. Eating gumbo as I type this.

  15.   Pow! Says:

Too often do I see Portland being too scared or too cool to dance these days. We’ve got to bring it BACK to the days when people in Portland really DANCED, un-self-consciously, how they wanted to. I need to be in the crowd making sure to BRING IT, to make sure to, ahem, Freedia asses from oppression!

    YAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

“We should consider every day lost in which we do not dance at least once.” ~ Nietzsche

  16.   Deanna Says:

Some dixie funk to get the yuletide juices flowin’! What more could a girl ask Santafor?

“i got some gin in my system, somebody gonna be my victim”

  18.   Tamara Says:

Your mom says to give me free tickets. Better listen.

  19.   weena Says:

I deserve these tickets for several reasons:
    1) I am not going to lie, I have an ass meant for shaking.
    2) In my mind i am not three quarters, but HALF New Orleanian.
    3) …and when, “I’ve got that gin in MY system. Somebody is going to be my victim!!!”

    Enuff said.

  20.   T Bone Says:

Cuz I gotta get my hot honky booty up in there and shake it, dammit.

  21.   Sancho Says:

I love New Orleans food. I love New Orleans music. I love Galactic. I want to shake my booty at this show!

  22.   lala Says:

wanna dance like i’m back in houston

p.s. all these kids commenting that they wanna shake their ass better shake it at this freedia show anyway, winner or no — i rarely see people in this town get down!

  23.   Erin Says:

Saw 1 show of his before by accident and was so pumped. Read up on this artist and seems to be the hardest working musician in the biz, much respect. And needless to say all I want to hear is that catchy tune “Ass everywhere”
