About Low (myspace.com/low)
"Low's approach to a holiday album is unlike any other. Eschewing the jolly — and overplayed — ditties that increasingly fill the other albums, Low presents a vision of Christmas that is a bit somber, but ultimately more filled with Christmas spirit than the whole wall of holiday hits at Sam Goody." ~Pop Matters
Low joins us for a special holiday show, and there is nothing like this rocking Minnesota-based trio to make us experience some yuletide joy. Their songs are a minimalist soundscape of harmonies and droning guitars, an ambient noise that was a far cry from the grunge that surrounded them during their formation. Touring in support of their vinyl reissue of Christmas, they'll be playing the traditional holiday songs of our youth (with a dash of Low's moody buzz and angelic harmonics), along with songs from their entire catalog and a sneak preview of tracks from their upcoming 2011 Sub Pop release.

About Mnemonic Sounds (myspace.com/mnemonicsounds)
"Some of the most fully formed, wistful pop that Portland has produced in some time."
~The Willamette Week
Portland's Mnemonic Sounds is Megan Ouchida and Peter Suk, a duo who dole out songs of programmed electronics and processed synths, with vocals harkening the Postal Service. Their rich harmonies, intricate textures, and dance beats have earned them comparisons to the likes of Tegan and Sara and Passsion Pit. Regardless, they continue to earn themselves a name with a lounge-like sound, electric guitar, bass, and dance rhythms keeping things oh-so-sexy.

About Alela Diane
"Every time Alela Diane sings one of her songs, a firefly gets its fire. The energy from her old soul voice creates spontaneous bioluminescence to occur in thin and thick air." ~Daytrotter
Singer/songwriter Alela Diane grew up in Nevada City, her songs meditative poems of nature, reflecting the old woods and rivers of the Gold Rush town she lived in. Her music is a timeless capture of her folk roots, warm vocals and multipart harmonies gently paired with simple acoustic arrangements. She's performed with the likes of Joanna Newsom (also a fellow Nevada City neighbor) and Blitzen Trapper, her musical styling's reverential and beautiful.

I fell in love with Alela Diane at Pickathon and it would be amazing to hear that voice again!

I’ve loved Low’s Christmas album for years, and this year I finally got into their other stuff. I’d love to see them in person!

I’d love to see Alela Diane @ Mississippi Studios!

Alela Diane’s voice and songs have haunted me for years, but I’ve not yet managed to catch her live. Would be just the restorative calm I’m craving after a too-busy fall, and a much welcome prelude to the holiday frenzy.

I was hoping to attend the Low-Christmas Tour, but haven’t purchased tickets yet! It would be awesome to win tix and participate in the holiday spirit and merriment at Mississippi Studios! Thank you!

My wife is the love of my life. She is beautiful, caring, and she always puts others ahead of herself. She absolutely loves Alela and nothing would make me happier than seeing the look on her face when I take her to this show as a suprise.
The show on the 14th would be the best for us. Thank you for your consideration.

I first heard Low on a mix my best friend made me six years ago. The approaching holiday has me feeling nostalgic for time spent with her and my family, who are 3000 miles away. I’m usually a Christmas nut, but I’m having a hard time getting into the spirit this year. Perhaps a holiday celebration at Mississippi Studios would help kick start that crazy joyousness Christmas usually gives me.

I am a HUGE fan of smaller indie bands doing Christmas albums. I get so sick of the stuff that gets played on the radio every year – it is so refreshing to hear it done in a different way. I would LOVE to see Low!!

my best friend who i haven’t seen since her wedding last year is going to be here in town this weekend. we have been listening to low since at least the mid-90s and seeing low this weekend would be such a perfect note for our reunion!
low – christmas tour. saturday night.

I think I caught Low on either their first or second tour in a conference room at UC Irvine and have followed them since, attending as many shows as possible. They are easily one of the better bands I’ve ever seen live, and their music has comforted me countless times over the years.
I’ve been dating a woman for a few months now who lives outta town, and she’s driving in for the weekend. She’s been through a lot, like, really abusive situations, and Christmas is her favorite time of the year. I think sharing this experience with her could bring a lot of good, healing things into her soul. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a Low show, or are familiar with their music, but they can have that kind of positively transformative effect on people. The love between them, their harmonies, their minimalist beauty, are really something special to experience.
I kinda broke right now; landlord just raised the rent, bank account’s overdrawn accruing horrific overdraft fees, collections won’t stop calling, the check engine light glows in my face to and from work every day ~ she’s gonna break down soon. I’m gonna go, regardless, I have a credit card. Fuck it. It’ll be worth it.
Free tickets would very cool, 40 bucks I can spend otherwise; one hell of a present. Mississippi’s pretty cool, I should be able to get my camera in and photograph the show, too, and post the images on my Flickr and into the pdxpipeline group.
There are probably more needy people out there. I’m gettin’ by, but this show’s gonna be great, Low shows always are, even if they’re sick.
Anyway, cheers. Go see the show!
~ Brian

Dude. I’m a grad student and broke as hell! I know I ain’t the only one broke, but I’ve listened to one album of Alela’s about a thousand times over. If laptops were records mine would be scratched as hell and skipping if you so much as looked at it. So please save my laptop some abuse. I have a thesis to write. Let me see this junk live!!

I would enjoy taking my girl friend to either concert, yet Low would help her get into the Christmas spirit. I’ve never heard their music, but the comments on this post make me want to experience their music over the holidays. Happy Holidays to whoever wins!

I am from northern Minnesota and would love to get a taste of home for the holidays with tickets to the Low Christmas Tour. I saw Charlie Parr perform years ago in the middle of now where Minnesota and can’t really say in words how nice it would be to see him again here. Thanks for your consideration.

Alela Diane. Yo-ho, ho-ho, yo-ho-ho-ho! If Alela tied pieces of string to a pirate’s gospel, I’d chase it all the way to Miss. Studios on Tuesday.

This would get the roommate out of the house…which would mean my girl would get into the house. Fun.
December 11, 2010 at 14:08
Low has written some of the best Christmas music ever. And their cover of the Little Drummer Boy is brilliant. I would love to take my man, but like everyone else, we are cash poor at the moment.
