December Delights
By Hollyanna McCollom

Holiday shopping is always a challenge, especially if you have someone on your list that falls into that “hard to shop for” category. Finding a gift for those loved ones can be a head scratcher because they either have everything or never seem to need anything. The Market is the perfect place to shop for those “unshoppables” because you will find handmade gifts that are not just unique, they are also about as local as it gets.

Pick up a hand blown flute glass vase from Howling Wolf Art Glass (www.howlingwolfglass.com) for the new homeowner in your life; or send that loved one who lives in a landlocked state some beautiful shots of the Pacific Northwest from photographer Peter McNamee (www.petermcnameephotography.com). There's a little something “Portland” for everyone on your list, which you can guarantee won't be found at any shopping mall.

Consider it a gift to both of you because, frankly, shopping at the mall this time of year can be a harrowing prospect. For many, the idea of simply parking at the mall inspires panic. For those disheartened shoppers, the Market is a great place to browse without the watered down holiday muzak and food vendors shouting at you to “Try a sample!”.

If heading to the Market on a Saturday or Sunday is not your cup of tea, head over to Pioneer Courthouse Square (715 SW Morrison St), where PSM hosts the Holiday Artisan Market December 7-10 from 11-6 pm. This is a local's favorite for finding unique Saturday Market gifts without the bustle of the usual weekend crowd. Each year, Portland's Living Room hosts this festive event where handmade jewelry, ceramics, stained glass and mosaics are just a few of the handcrafted goods available for purchase.

Of course, if you are like most people, the holidays come crashing down around you before you have even had a chance to purchase a peppermint latte. For you procrastinators out there, there is still hope. Once again, Portland Saturday Market will be hosting the Festival of the Last Minute, an aptly named opportunity for you to get that special gift mere moments before for you actually need it. From December 16 right up until December 24, you can shop the Market everyday from 110in on weekdays, 100in on Saturdays and 11-4:30pm on Sundays. And while you are shopping, don't forget: if you can't find that perfect something, you can always purchase a gift card from the PSM information kiosk.

Finally, where ever you are and whatever you are shopping for, we wish you the happiest and most fortunate of holiday seasons!

I love the market because it’s just so Portland and there are so many talented artists in this city that it’s nice to get a large amount of them together in 1 place to shop them all at once. I’ve been wanting to buy one of the really cute tutus for a while now and the gift certificate would make that possible! Thanks!

I’d like to buy two gorgeous, locally made gifts for my good friend’s birthday. Like me, she has a birthday in the midst of the holidays and her birthday is often neglected in the midst of Christmas/Hanukkah celebrations. This year, she gets birthday AND holiday gifties!

  7.   Sandra de Helen Says:

Portland Saturday Market is the place to go to find unique gifts not only for the holidays, but anytime. I so love and appreciate PSM. When I moved here 30 years ago, I went expecting to find a farmers’ market and was delighted to find an artists and craftspersons’ market with wonderful foods as well. Opening the PSM for the holidays was a wonderful idea that has allowed me to buy handmade gifts for my friends and family for many years. Long live Portland Saturday Market!

  8.   Jenn Says:

And, I am a good shopper and will return on many subsequent Saturdays.

Maybe those furry cat ears for bike helmets or a t-shirt or a wooly hat or …..

  45.   Irina Says:

I look forward to shopping at the Saturday Market, especially during the holidays, because of the quality artisans featured at the market and the endless offerings of cutting-edge items on sale. I always bring my out-of-town family and friends to the Saturday Market to visit the many stalls and to purchase their souvenirs from the vendors. As an Oregonian, I am proud of what the Saturday Market symbolizes: artistic creativity and rugged individualism combined with Pacific Northwest ingenuity. Saturday Market is uppermost in my thoughts at Christmas time and during the rest of the year.

I like to go to the Saturday Market on occasion because it is so much fun. Went there 2 Christmasses ago on the coldest day of the year, and those troopers with space heaters in their stalls kept the market open for all of us brave shoppers. Haven’t been paid in awhile from my boss, because he spent his money on a large project and thus he cannot afford to pay his employees, so I would love a gift certificate to start a little shopping before Christmas.

  59.   Aileen Kerns Says:

I like the smell of espresso cart, the sound of the musicians playing in the large white tent and the bright colors on the paintings, photographs and tie-dye t-shirts. 65.   hcstout Says:

I would LOVE this, because I love Saturday Market in Portland for a lot of reasons, but the biggest is the people and the closeness and weirdly unique individuality I experience when I go. It’s an amazing place to be, and every time I got so somewhere else that is supposed to be amazing, I find myself comparing it to Saturday Market and being disappointed. I felt that way every time I went to Pike’s Place Market in Seattle and the Swap Meet in Honolulu. Nothing beats you, Portland!

  66.   Ruth Says:

I have really wanted a handmade wooden box one of the vendors makes for some time. I always stop by the booth and I just love it. It shows great craftsmanship and the boxes even have a hidden drawer. Unfortunately money has been tight but I would really love to get that for myself for Christmas.

  67.   Nikki Says:

I am not even scared of the rain! I will be there to support the local artists. Hand made and local is the only way to shop for holiday gifts.

  68.   CB Says:

I think that this market should be more the representative for the northwest over Pikes Place in Seattle since it has much more people created artistry and a feeling of connection between the buyer and creator. That is one reason I like and support Saturday Market

  69.   artodd Says:

I’m flat broke and fast running out of time to make my own crafts as gifts. Help me to help a fellow (flat broke) crafter!

The Portland Saturday Market was my very first job. I was 16, and I can’t think of a more perfect first job than to work with talented and amazing artists and crafters! It is pretty incredible that we have the PSM in our city, all involved in the market, from the inside out, help make Portland the best city!

Saturday Market. It’s where you take your out-of-town friends to see the Max and Old Town and Waterfront Park and the Skidmore Fountain AND get your buy-local holiday shopping knocked out!

Holiday shopping for myself. And an elephant ear.

  81.   Adrienne Says:

The market is a one-stop-shopping place. The variety of handmade gifts is wonderfully overwhelming! I would love to help out my fellow Portland artists and spend this money at any of the stalls.

  82.   Amanda Says:

I want to win so I can buy cool local Christmas presents for my fam!

  83.   Traci Palmer Says:

I love Saturday market! People everywhere and being surrounded by all the home made craftiness is wonderful!
If I received the gift certificate I would definitely spend it @ the Cretin booth. He has amazing artwork and quality clothing. My niece and sister would love me forever when I gifted them such gorgeous works of art! Yeah PDX Pipeline, make my holiday!

  84.   Heather Says:

I love the Saturday market! I live out of town now and it is something I come back and visit every time I am in Portland. I am here for the holiday season and having money to shop there would be lovely:)

  85.   Ian Says:

I’m a huge procrastinator (like most everyone) when it comes to Christmas present shopping, and I hate the mall. The week before Christmas I can head to PSM and knock out my entire shopping list is one fell swoop. Sweet!

  86.   Eric Says:

Oh, how I could use this!!! And would love it and hug it and squeeze it forever…

  87.   sean Says:

I did all my Christmas shopping at the market last year and everybody was so happy with their gifts. I love supporting the local artists. I would use the $25 to get myself something this year. I’ve been eying those cribbage boards forever.
