"Shanghai Nights" – Mixing Portland's past with a 21st century version of “The Forbidden City.”
Stephanie Schneiderman, Devin Phillips, & Scott Law to perform, with sets from Seattle-based McTuff Trio & Bay Area's live electronic act Materialized
Late-night String Cheese Incident Remix Set performed by Genre-bending electronica producer, DJ Harry
Shanghai Nights returns for New Year's Eve at Portland's historic Bossanova Ballroom with an exciting lineup assembled from leftcoast all-star musicians, including Portland-based saxman Devin Phillips and Seattle's McTuff Trio, ambient indie artist, Stephanie Schneiderman (Dirty Martini, Voices For Silent Disasters), and rising-star guitarman, Scott Law, who will be joined by former Tough Mama bandmates "Mighty" Dave Pellicciaro (Jackmormons) and Dale Fanning (Living Daylights), with Keith Lowe (Fiona Apple, BRAD) on bass. The night culminates with a STRING CHEESE INCIDENT REMIX SET, from genre-bending Colorado-based DJ/producer, DJ Harry, who will be joined by the Motet's Jans Ingber on percussion.
Portland was once considered one of the most dangerous ports in the world, earning the moniker “Forbidden City of the West” for the sordid, illicit deeds that were carried out on the edge of the Willamette. This year's 3rd Annual Shanghai Nights — "The New World's Forbidden City" — calls up that dark past with an imaginative mix of hot performance art, diverse live music, and dance at the newly remodeled Bossanova Ballroom. From the moment you walk into the Bossanova, you feel the refined ambiance of a classic, turn-of-the-century social club infused with the energy of a hip, urban lounge, incorporating the elegant, art-deco stylings of an original, old-world Freemason's Hall into a 21st century nightclub.
Count on surprise guests, creative merriment, and live dancing from Tana the Tattooed Lady, tribal nouveau dancer NagaSita and more! With a diverse and exciting lineup this year, Shanghai Nights has got it all.

New Year’s Eve has been a bust the last few years. It would be great to have a rockin’, dancin’, ringin’ in the new year time for 2011!

I’ve been going to shows since I was 15 and am now 61.
I dig the lineup, love the theme, and would be overjoyed to win a pair of tix to this event.
Thanks for listening,
Ken aka Sir DaL (DanceaLot)

Just moved to Portland with my boyfriend and his band and want our new year here to start with a great party! We are of course still broke as we have just found jobs and spent a lot of mullah to get here. Please pick me so we can cut down the cost of all 6 of us attending! (:
December 17, 2010 at 13:05
Because I am 30yrs old and all I have ever done for New Years Eve is watch the ball drop with Dick Clark (at best).
December 17, 2010 at 15:57
Ready to celebrate Portland-style!
December 17, 2010 at 23:02
Almost always had to work on New Year’s Eve and only have one memorable party year. Unemployed and starting my own venture, so I’m living pretty much on fumes. Tickets for a party would work with my budget and help me to ring in the New Year on a high note!!
December 18, 2010 at 16:27
New years day is every man, woman and child’s birthday! I’d love to rage that dance floor and wish happy birthday to all my brothers and sister in time from the top of my lungs!
December 18, 2010 at 22:19
Well!I and my wife have never been to a new years party.I am 64 years and we love to mix it up with the young folks
December 19, 2010 at 00:54
me and my sister are in town for the holidays and want something memorable to do this new years!
December 19, 2010 at 08:31
I’ve never attended a New Year’s Eve event in PDX – usually away and this one sounds great!!!! Being unemployed makes it financially impossible for me to attend otherwise.
December 19, 2010 at 11:59
Hi! My partner and I are new to Portland this year. We’ve actually never celebrated New Year’s Eve out before, but have such a great feeling about the vibe and people here in PDX that we would love to spend the evening bringing in the new year with fellow PDXers. We have high hopes for a new year in our new city.
December 19, 2010 at 17:53
I would love to go because I have never been and everyone I know that has gone seems to agree its an awesome spot… so I figure New Years Eve is as good a time as any to find out first hand!
And lets face it… free is about the only way I could afford tickets to actually be able to enjoy New Years Eve in style! :)
December 20, 2010 at 00:13
We don’t have any plans for NYE yet and this sounds like the party to be at to kick off 2011! Cheers!
December 22, 2010 at 11:55
Wow – this sounds like a cool event. I’ve never seen any of these performers, but would love to check them, and the Bossanova room out. I’ve heard it’s good, but haven’t made my way over there yet.
Happy New Year!
Susan
