The popular RiverCity Music Festival, born the RiverCity Bluegrass Festival, has evolved, matured - and gotten even better. The festival, scheduled Jan. 7 - 9, 2011, at its new home, The Red Lion at Jantzen Beach, offers one of the most exciting and eclectic collection of musicians ever to perform in a single Portland weekend.
For six years, RiverCity Bluegrass Festival fans assembled at the Oregon Convention Center every January. After a one-year break, the festival has changed its name, moved to a smaller, more comfortable setting and expanded its musical range. In addition to acclaimed bluegrass performers (Rhonda Vince & The Rage, Lou Reid & Carolina; The Peter Rowan Band), the festival has musicians from the top of other musical genres.
These include names like: The Time Jumpers, the Western Swing supergroup featuring Nashville’s best-known front men and studio musicians; Guy Clark, father of the Texas singer-songwriters; John Jorgenson, who adds “monster Gypsy Jazz” man to his long list of guitar style masteries; Dave Alvin, of Blasters Fame, with his latest band, The Guilty Women. See a complete list of musicians below.
This year’s festival features:
- 14 national acts and many regional performers
- Two large stages: The Grand Ballroom seating 1,600 and the Mt. St. Helens Room seating 600.
- Performances in the bar, with seating for 250
- Two full-service restaurants
- Plenty of room for jamming, listening, visiting - and 320 rooms so visitors can sneak off for a nap between shows
In addition, the festival offers
- A youth program
- A Friday night dance to local Bakersfield-to-Liverpool band,The Buckles
- A Saturday night square dance with favorite caller Bill Martin
- Workshops on instruments, vocal harmonies, stage sound and more
- Instrument and craft vendors

I would love to win tickets to this festival! I have loved bluegrass music for ages – starting when I was a little kid, watching Mike Nesmith play his bluegrass songs on the Monkees. I’ve expanded my tastes to other artists since then, but that’s where it all began. :-)
January 4, 2011 at 12:42
This looks like a great way to be introduced to this genre of music. I’ve heard some of these bands on Yahoo music & would live to hear more. Please how can anyone turn down getting out & about to avoid winter dulls, especially when this sounds so entertaining!

My best friend is moving to Taiwan in a few short weeks. In college we spent our time at a local music venue, supporting musicians by our cheers and dancing. We would love to come support good music, and spend this weekend in Portland reliving the glory days of good music and good people.

The best indoor festival events on West Coast. Was invited to go last year and made the trip north and was not disappointed. Great music on stage and better jamming in the rooms, hall ways and had the weather permitted I’m sure in parking lot. Very well done. My hats off to all the volunteers.
