About Kurtis Blow (www.kurtisblow.net):
Kurtis Blow cemented his iconic status in Hip Hop by being the first hip hop artist to sign with a major record label. His major label debut in 1980 "The Breaks" was the first certified gold hip hop record and he was the first hip hop artist to tour nationally and internationally. In addition to this, he collaborated with and wrote songs for a variety of successful artists including the Fat Boys and Run DMC. These accomplishments helped pave the way for hip hop to grow from a youth movement in Harlem in the late 70s to the mainstream American musical sphere in the early 80s.
These days Kurtis Blow is busier than ever. Besides live rap performances worldwide, Blow recently co-hosted the Hip Hop Hall of Fame awards alongside ICE-T and Kool Herc. In late November, Kurtis Blow was interviewed on PBS NewsHour to comment on the the recent release of The Anthology of Rap, a scholarly anthology of rap released by the Yale University Press.
Kurtis Blow now has his sights set on the Mt. Tabor Theater for 2 nights of original, old school rap. After booking a rare performance from the Digable Planets back in August, the Mt. Tabor Theater is quickly establishing itself in Portland as a destination for Hip Hop. This distinction becomes increasingly important with the Hip Hop void left behind by the recent closure of Berbati's Pan and the Satyricon. Opportunities to see legends like Kurtis Blow do not come along often. This one is a winner.

Never really thought that I might have the chance to see Kurtis Blow play in Portland. As a fan of hip hop, I need to add this experience to my list. Thursday night’s show would be awesome!
