Arty, expansive dance music with a healthy dose of 90s influence.
24-year-old weirdo performance artist Travis Egedy, a.k.a. Pictureplane, obsesses over the cosmos, 90s house music, collective consciousness, and mind-altering chemicals you've never heard of. Much like his interests, Pictureplane's music is strange and boundless and totally righteous. Egedy has cut his teeth on raging tours with HEALTH, a collab with Beirut's Zach Condon and killer remixes for Crystal Castles, HEALTH, and Thieves Like Us. Grimy synths, broken beats, and bucolic vocals collide somewhere between early 90s house music and the gnarly soundscapes of Black Dice to forge a sound that's wholly unique and endlessly exciting. It's exceedlingly rare to find dance music that transcends the cold and robotic, but Pictureplane does just that. The music feels at once personal and cosmically expansive.

Pitchfork writes of Teengirl Fantasy: “Teengirl fall in line with a current crop of very sharp twentysomething dudes who can't help but mess with the pop, R&B, and dance music they grew up with. People like UK dubstep-soul guru James Blake, Keith Sweat-adoring no-fi crooner How to Dress Well, and fellow Oberlin pair Blondes are all filtering searing musical memories through their defraction lenses. It's not just that they don't have the means to replicate the top-notch production of their beat-based idols– they don't want to. It's not a knee-jerk response against yesteryear's hits as much as an open-minded exploration of those songs' more spaced-out possibilities. “I definitely think it's cool to go back and put the past together in any way that I want,” [Logan] Takahashi [of Teengirl fantasy] told me. Teengirl Fantasy's particular strategy for making non-club kids move picks and chooses bits of funked Chicago house, island-breeze Balearic beats, and sultry soul ÃÆ'  la Sade.”

For tonight's performance, Pictureplane is joined by a troupe of some of Portland's most talented modern dancers, featuring members of Wooly Mammoth Comes to Dinner and GDP! Kathleen Keogh, Noelle Stiles, Sarah Johnson, Lena Kassof, and Alicia McDaid will all be performing!

Teenage girls are all the rage these days… Katy Perry’s new album is called Teenage Dream (and the title track is super good!), and then there’s the new Beach House album Teen Dream. Is it cute or creepy? Either way, pretty sure Teengirl Fantasy will be awesome live.
