Featuring: Drew Grow and the Pastor's Wives | Chris Robley | Tango Alpha Tango | Charmparticles | Bryan Free | Deepest Darkest | Dr. Theopolis | UHF | The Ravishers
On February 12th at the Wonder Ballroom, several local bands will gather and perform for two good causes: to cover their favorite 80s guilty-pleasure love songs and to benefit Ethos Music.
Put on by local indie-pop-shoegazer outfit Charmparticles, Cover Your Hearts is in its 4th year. This year's line-up is a mixture of Cover Your Hearts veterans and fresh faces: Bryan Free, Drew Grow and the Pastor's Wives, Dr. Theopolis, Tango Alpha Tango, Deepest Darkest, Chris Robley, UHF, Ravishers and, of course, Charmparticles themselves.
In case you missed it, Bryan Free's performance at last year's event was included as the #1 Portland live music moment on a recent "Best of 2010" list at opbmusic.org here.
A show filled with so much sheer fun that it's easy to forget that it's a fundraiser, Charmparticles created Cover Your Hearts as a way to sneak philanthropy into the local rock scene and to raise money for the non-profit music educators at Ethos Music. Raising money for the kids at Ethos is its own reward but, of course, hearing some of Portland's best musicians covering their favorite guilty-pleasure love songs is pretty awesome, too.
All (100%) of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to support Ethos Music, an organization that was established as a direct response to budget cuts in public schools which limited music education for children. The Ethos mission is that every child has a right to learn and make music. Through Ethos, music education is available on a sliding scale so that any child can participate.
The songs featured at Cover Your Hearts are chosen based on three vital pieces of criteria: they have to be about love (falling in love, falling out of love, or, ahem…getting busy, etc!); they have to be from the 80's (plus or minus a couple years on either side!); and they have to be a big enough hit that the entire audience can sing along to at least the chorus. This makes for much swaying, Bic-flicking, and fist pumping in the crowd. Who could forget previous event performances including Derby's rendition of "Sister Christian," Dr. Theopolis' cover of "Keep On Loving You," or Deepest Darkest's pitch-perfect "Girl You Know It's True," complete with over-sized blazer, skin-tight leggings, and fake lip-sync stutter?!
A brief history of Cover Your Hearts:
Cover Your Hearts 1, 2008: Charmparticles make good on a plan hatched during a sleep-deprived portion of a west coast tour. They gather up some buddies, book Someday Lounge for the show, and go for it. The show unexpectedly sells out and the team raises more than $2,000 for Ethos.
Cover Your Hearts 2, 2009: Charmparticles decides to do it again to see if the first year was a fluke. Again, the show sells out within minutes of the doors opening, and the line for entry goes around the block. Again, the team raises over $2,000 for Ethos.
Cover Your Hearts 3, 2010: Charmparticles take a risk and decide to add a second show, making a two-night extravaganza filled with lipstick-stained wine glasses, lighters (and phone apps that mimic lighters) in the air, and sore throats from belting out song after song. The two-night engagement raises a staggering $5,000 for Ethos Music!
Cover Your Hearts 4, 2011: Recognizing that the event has outgrown their partners at Someday Lounge, Charmparticles attempt to up the ante by moving the show to the larger capacity Wonder Ballroom. The band hopes that the increased capacity will equal a bigger, better show that will raise even more money to support the programs at Ethos. The band is intent on making this event a "must attend" Portland tradition, after all — just as every child deserves a music education, every Portlander deserves a little guilty pleasure.

I’ve never been before but it’s my boyfriend’s birthday on February 12th and his name is Russell and I see your address is located on Russell St. This has to be a sign that we are suppose to be there! :)

My husband Ryan and I just moved to Portland a few months ago and he is a musician that is very interested in the music scene. We’re pretty tight on cash, we’re both looking for work like crazy but right now neither one of us has income so we haven’t been able to attend a show in Portland. It’s his birthday today and I was Google searching something free to do in Portland, and this popped up :) I know this event would make his day, and probably his year.
