Called reggae’s “Mellow Canary” by virtue of his strong, pure vocal style, he’s renowned as the first original singer of the dancehall era. Barrington developed his signature riff by experimenting with different vocalizations and bouncing the sounds off the surrounding hills.
A driving force in reggae music, Levy remains the perennial favorite of audiences in Jamaica – and throughout the world. Always a solid voice and a uniquely expressive song style, Barrington is consistently at the forefront of the music scene, and has become the most requested vocalist in reggae music history. In the late 1980′s, Barrington Levy began working with veteran producer Jah Screw, and together they created some of reggae’s most memorable recordings. There was the classic album of Barrington’s greatest hits dubbed Broader Than Broadway, which is one of the best reggae collections ever created.
After a stunning performance on the 1994 Sunsplash, Barrington was signed to MCA Records, but quickly parted ways with the label and began working with Jah Screw to make the Duets album, where Levy teamed with all the hottest DJs from Beenie Man to Lady Saw. He came back larger than life with Bounti Killer on the song “Living Dangerously” – undisputedly the biggest reggae song of 1996, both in Jamaica and the United States, and for months held the 1 spot on the dancehall charts worldwide. Barrington was lifted to the top of the charts, his career in full swing again, and continues to remain at the top of playlists on every radio station in Jamaica, and dancehalls throughout the world.

Black black roses, are bloomin’ in my garden! Barrington Levy is one the best reggae artists on all time in my opinion. His call and response in Rastaman jibberish, is an experience not to be missed! Even if I dont win tix, im still going! MurdererrrrRRRRRAAAAAA!
March 1, 2011 at 14:56
I could take Rastamouse. He loves reggae and cheese.
March 1, 2011 at 18:33

When I think of the masters of reggae music, my mind automatically thinks of the late, great Bob Marley and the originator of dancehall reggae, Barrington Levy. Barrington Levy’s unique sound puts me at ease and in that reggae vibe that lovers of reggae cannot deny. One song in particular, “Prison Oval Rock”, is one of my favorites. It brings me back to a time when I was riding down the highway bobbin’ my head to the rhythm. When the sun was shining and I didn’t have a care in the world. And ’til this day, that song still has that effect on me. I am so excited to see this reggae legend in person and bob my head to the rhythm once again.

I’ve lived in Portland a little over a year now and have yet to see a show at Mt. Tabor Theater. Please help me remedy this faux pas.
March 2, 2011 at 10:54
I was listening to dancehall before it was cool!
Seriously though, I made my entrance into Reggae Dancehall in 2007 when I visited Kingston. I was introduced to Buju Banton and Sizzla and, of course, Barrington Levy! I love Jamaican culture and I’m aching to revisit the their beautiful music!
March 2, 2011 at 12:13
Just a drop of sunshine and the most amazing performer would be a delight and i can only imagine such sounds! Any opportunity to drift away to this classic performer?
March 2, 2011 at 14:55
I missed the great weekend of Bob Marley birthday music cuz I had no dough,
Barrington Levy-please help me go.
I’ve got less money than I had befo.
I really could use a good reggae show.
March 2, 2011 at 15:50
Who is this guy, Barrington Levy??? In an unrelated note, the song “Under Mi Sensi” is my favorite of all time. Wait… is that the same Barrington Levy?!?! Give me, give me, give me! pplleeeaaasseee? sorry to kinda beg, but I’m broke too.
March 3, 2011 at 00:08
The Northwest has been my home for 3 years now. I love, love, love it. There is but one thing missing though… a consistent, vibrant reggae scene.
Barrington Levy reminds me of small, sweaty dancehalls, dimly lit by red lightbulbs. Dancehalls packed with smiles across the faces of people from all around the world, with one thing in common, the love of reggae.
I want to go to this show because it makes me happy, and it makes me happy to see others happy too.
March 3, 2011 at 11:45
Reggae Music transports me to an island. I lived on an island for a year in the tropics and sometimes I think I have never recovered. But who wants to recover from paradise? Send me back, please, even if just for a little while. Ja. I even have Jamaican flag colored Puma’s I would wear to the show.
March 3, 2011 at 12:19
who DOESN’T want to go?!? as time passes, the forefathers (and mothers) of reggae are heading back to the the mother of all motherlands. this has happened with the founders of jazz and i’m thankful i had the foresight to see as many of them as i did.
i’m working hard to have the same experience with our reggae greats. it would be a notable achievement to add barrington to my list. perhaps you can help me with this goal, sight? seen!
March 3, 2011 at 14:04

Oh my gosh I love Barrington Levy’s voice. It is so awesome, and the music really does make you feel warm on a cold, rainy day. He came to OSU a few years ago in front of a packed quad on a misty night, it was awesome. Listen to his music all the time on ipod
March 5, 2011 at 15:13
I’m of Jamaican decent and my wife and I moved to PDX in ’04 with our kids from the east coast. We love it here but miss our family and culture. My wife’s Puerto Rican by the way. Winning these tickets would be a great way for us let off some steam in PDX.

Last time I went to see Barrington Levy I drove from Ashland to Eugene and the show ended up being cancelled. I need redemption, and something to offset the gas money I’ll spend to get all the way up to Portland and back (either way I’m going, but it’d be good to at least offset some of the cost). Plus, Mt. Tabor theater needs me there to plug in…
March 10, 2011 at 11:27
Gotta gotta dance! ‘Nuff said!
March 10, 2011 at 12:57

April 1, 2011 at 07:27
Barington Levy is the SWING of reggae music- he is the SKIBIDY BOP BOP BOP BOP WOAH of roots- he puts the FUNKY in dancehall- he turns the base up and gets the crowd smiling and shaking what their mama gave em like the world was gonna end and this was the BUBBLE AND WIND to save it.
I wear a ring on my finger cuz I married an African dread- love of my life- A DANCE HALL REGGAE LOVA like me- a DJ- a dreamer- & I am a poet and song writer and a schemer.
My latest scheme is searching the internet when I should be getting ready for work for a music we can take our no money having, good time having, ready to shake our fine asses too.
Think on it….bless.
