Expect a night of contrasts as Carlos Kalmar pairs two of the 20th century's most imaginative musical creations: the boldly expressive Violin Concerto of Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian alongside Claude Debussy's sublime, impressionist La mer.
The concert is the orchestra's second collaboration with Latvian violinist Baiba Skride, who is still in her 20s and widely regarded as one of the rising stars of the music world. At her Oregon Symphony debut in November 2008, she performed the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. Skride is one of the few young classical performers with a major-label recording contract.
The concert opens and closes with two nautical-themed compositions: the orchestra's premiere performance of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius' The Oceanides (The Sea Nymphs) and French composer Claude Debussy's La mer (The Sea). Also on the program, Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 39.
