In this genre-bending chamber concert, DJ Gabriel will spin, and Fear No Music will present some of DJ Gabriel's most recent classical works, including the large scale work 'IMPORT/EXPORT' for British percussionist Joby Burgess's group Powerplant, using objects from a junkyard. Guests include former Oregon Ballet Theater Principal Dancer, Gavin Larsen, and members of the Oregon Symphony.
Portland's contemporary/post-classical ensemble Fear No Music is consistently praised for its unusual and innovative performances. FNM is dedicated to the chamber music of our own time and masters of the 20th century.
Gabriel Prokofiev is a London-based DJ, composer, producer, and founder of independent label & club night NONCLASSICAL. In addition to studying Electro-acoustic Composition at both Birmingham and York universities, he has also been producing Dance, Electronica and Hip-Hop music under a variety of different guises over the last ten years.
The grandson of internationally beloved 20th-century classical composer, Sergei Prokofiev (of such iconic works as “Peter and the Wolf,” and “Romeo and Juliet”), Gabriel returned to his classical roots in 2003, composing the critically acclaimed String Quartet No.1 (“Stunning” by DJ Magazine, “defies comparison” Daily Telegraph). The piece was released on his NONCLASSICAL label, complete with remixes of the original Quartet.

I’d love to hear some fantastic percussion work and am interested in the gender-bending aspect of this show.

Artificial lines are drawn that keep fans of classical and modern music in two separate camps. I’d be thrilled to experience one of the few musicians who can fully embrace the two simultaneously.

Sounds intriguing and exciting – weren’t many classical composers considered “experimental” in their day? I like percussion-heavy pieces, too. Fingers crossed.

This would be a great opportunity as a piano/voice teacher and lover of all music to hear Gabriel. I would love to hear the grandson of Sergei. Super great!
