It’s shaping up to be a stellar year for celebrated New Orleans outfit Galactic. On February 9th the band released their groundbreaking new album Ya-Ka-May a visionary mix, intertwining New Orleans sounds from jazz to brass band to funk and far beyond. With this release, the five-man group comprised of drummer Stanton Moore, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonist/harmonica player Ben Ellman, keyboardist Richard Vogel, and guitarist Jeff Raines – reaffirms their status as the quintessential modern day New Orleans band and one of the funkiest outfits in the known universe.
Being immersed in all the various New Orleans music scenes, Galactic are in a unique position to bring them all together. On Ya-Ka-May, they have powerfully connected these genres, illuminating how they are all part of one distinct musical continuum. The album features established legends such as the Rebirth Brass Band, Irma Thomas, Big Chief Bo Dollis, Allen Toussaint, Trombone Shorty and Corey Henry, John Boutt, Josh Cohen and Scully, Glen David Andrews, and Walter “Wolfman” Washington alongside groundbreaking new “Bounce” artists like Cheeky Blakk, Big Freedia, Katey Red, and Sissy Nobby. The end result is New Orleans like it’s meant to be heard, and pure Galactic.
John Brown’s Body‘s live show has the kind of organic, body-rocking sound that’s only possible with an 8-piece band where air-tight drum and bass, a three piece horn section, and “the most gorgeous melodies in all of modern reggae music” [All Music Guide] meet a dubbed-out sound engineer. Where will JBB head next? The near future includes first ever tours of the UK and New Zealand, as well as initial work on the follow up to their album Amplify. What direction will the music take? Who knows, but whatever it is, it is sure to push boundaries.

Would like to attend because it sounds like a ton of fun and I could use some fun in my life. Thanks!
March 22, 2011 at 14:08
I should win because it’s my anniversary with my girlfriend and I can’t afford to take us!!
March 22, 2011 at 14:58
Wow, just realize I’ve seen Galactic 12-15 times and never, ever seen them indoors. Guess they are accustomed to playing under tents or the stars. The bouncy floor is sure to get a work out that night, hope I get a chance to go if I win.

I would like to but can’t afford it at this time. I’ve been unemployed for 16 of the last 18 months and was just informed today that a company I want to return to will not have any work for the foreseeable future.
March 23, 2011 at 01:34
Sounds like great music. I would love to win tickets.
March 23, 2011 at 09:19
I would love to see Galactic. I have been unemployed for the last 18 months severely limiting my show going. I also learned yesterday that the company ready to re-hire me won’t be able to in the forseeable future. It would be fun to go shake out the negative energy with a great band like Galactic!

Southern funk on the left coast? Have to go!!
March 24, 2011 at 09:33
New Orleans music has more soul than anywhere else. Hook me up, por favor.
March 24, 2011 at 09:53
I’ve been listening to Galactic for about 8 years now and have never had an opportunity to see them live. Always in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’ve had quite a few friends tell me over the years that “I’ve got to see them live”. I definitely miss the House Man, his vocals and contributions to the band were amazing, however I’ve heard the shows with Cyril Neville have been incredible.
Bottom line, i think it’s time I get funkified with Galactic.
I’d love to have that opportunity
March 24, 2011 at 09:56
Oh, pick me! I love me some NoLA sound!
March 24, 2011 at 11:59
I’ve seen Galactic several years ago and really enjoyed their performance. The music is energetic and moveable. I would love to see their musical energy live again.
