Formed in 2010, Wheels in the Sky: A Tribute to Journey, is a band made up of five A-list jazz, funk and rock musicians from Portland, Oregon's thriving music scene. The brainchild of Michael Vincent Michaels III (a.k.a. Josh Cliburn), Wheels in the Sky pays tribute to the power, majesty and sensuality of classic Journey, culled from the albums Infinity through Raised on Radio. The band eschews nostalgia for intense and passionate live performances of the original music, including such radio staples as ¬Å“Don't Stop Believin',¬Â ¬Å“Any Way You Want It,¬Â ¬Å“Feelin' That Way/Anytime,¬Â ¬Å“Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'¬Â and ¬Å“Who's Cryin' Now.¬Â
Michael Vincent Michaels III, before forming Wheels in the Sky, enjoyed 10+ years as one of Portland's most respected tenor saxophone players in top-tier jazz/funk groups Porterhouse and, most recently, Intervision. Possessing the same power and range as Steve Perry, Michaels honed his Journey chops through many incendiary late-night karaoke sessions - much to his ladyfriends' delight.
Laird Franklin and John McIsaac, holding down guitar and bass duties respectively, came to Wheels from Int'l Male, a top-draw disco/funk act that packed nationally known Portland nightclub Jimmy Mak's and other local venues for four years straight.
Keyboardist/vocalist George Melissa (a.k.a. Jeff Sechs) splits his time between Wheels and popular Portland neo-soul group Excellent Gentlemen. A talented vocalist in his own right, Melissa easily tackles the Gregg Rolie leads from the early records. Albie Forsterer, widely considered to be the godfather of Portland heavy rock drummers, is a dedicated student of all of Journey's drummers, from Prairie Prince to Deen Castronovo.

Oh my god! My parents’ first date was a Journey concert (their first date was seeing Animal House in theaters)! It’s basically in my blood to love them, even their not-so-famous tracks like the songs from the original Tron.

Journey was the first band my brother turned me onto as a child. I’ve never been quite the same since.

This could be the one chance to bury the hatchet on a bad 80′s relationship the went wayward at the old MC on a dark stormy night when the Lights went out on love..

In 1988 ,”The Last American Virgin”, a classic 80′s movie is what exposed my puny 9yr old ears to Journey. “Open Arms” played 4 times in that movie. I went to the music store the next day and bought a cassette tape, Journey’s Greatest Hits. While my friends were swooning over New kids On the Block, I was blasting ‘Wheel In the Sky” and developing a crush on Steve Perry.
I now have a collection of their vinyl albums that my husband makes fun of me for. I dont care. Journey forever!
