MANY Portland First Thursday Art Openings & Events | NW, SW, Pearl, Old Town, China Town

First Thursday @ Everett Station Lofts, Portland, OregonPortland’s monthly First Thursday event is tonight! And there is currently some sunshine, so the crowds should be out starting around 6 or 7. There are over 50 (probably 100) galleries having openings this month.

We have a very large list below thanks to Sequential Art Gallery (328 NW Broadway) & Rich Vail Mackin. They compile an email called the “[h]IT LIST” of events every month. You can join it by emailing them @ sequentialart @ gmail dot com. We have reproduced much of it below with permission.

MANY Portland First Thursday Art Events----------------

This Month at Sequential Art Gallery:
Everett Station Lofts, 328 NW Broadway #113

Sequential Art welcomes Lukas Ketner back to the gallery, as he brings us “Witch Doctor: Under the Knife”. This exhibit offers a preview of the forthcoming “Witch Doctor” four-issue miniseries by Ketner and writer  Brandon Seifert, published by Robert Kirkman (“The Walking Dead”)  through Skybound (a divison of Image Comics). Ketner says that this exhibition will have “…a little of everything from  the past three years, from concept sketches to pages and covers, past, present, and a bit of what’s to come.” The exhibit opens on First Thursday, April 7th, with both Ketner and Seifert in attendance at the opening. “Witch Doctor: Under the Knife” is just one of the many events of Portland’s annual Comic Book Month. Ketner and Seifert are also featured guests at this year’s Stumptown Comics Fest.

His previous show at Sequential Art in May 2009 was “Black Gold & Iron Ore”, a collection of his work for Portland band, The Builders and the Butchers.

Curated by Kaebel JK Hashitani and Merrick Monroe.

ART NOT TO BE MISSED…

----------------

April is National Photography Month, and it’s also the time of year for a certain thing with comic art, which we hold a bit dear in our hearts here. With that in mind, some suggestions for this month:

Event the First: (ANKA GALLERY | 325 NW 6th Ave | Portland, OR 97209)
In 1957 Russell A. Kirsch created the square shaped digital pixel and by doing so created the fundamental building block on which all digital imagery is based. The most vibrant and dynamic industries in the world rely on Mr. Kirsch’s creation to power their products. He has literally shaped the way we view the world and consume visual media.

Now, over half a century later, Russell A. Kirsch will reshape the world as we view it during a special First Thursday presentation of Mr. Kirsch’s new Variable Shaped Pixel Webcast to world live from the Anka Gallery 8pm PST.

Event the Second: (Pony Club |625 NW Everett St | Suite #105 | Portland, OR 97209)
Sequential has no monopoly on comic-related art. Pony Club will feature the Stumptown Cartoonist Show: a celebration of cartooning and illustrative storytelling, featuring work by Trevor Alixopulos, Andrice Arp, Sean Christensen A.B.T., Farel Dalrymple, Jason JFish Fischer, Julia Gfrorer, KC Green, Chuck Groenink, Meg Hunt, John Isaacson, Amy Kuttab, Brian Lee, Phil McAndrew, Jed McGowan, BT Livermore, Katy Ellis O’Brien, Jesse Reklaw, Zack Soto, Hopskotch Sunday, Corey Thompson, Sophie Yanow and more!

------

Event the Third: (Nisus Gallery | 328 NW Broadway (at Flanders) #117)
Nisus Gallery and the Center for Cartooning Studies (VT) have partnered on a group showing of comic artists. There will be hung works as well as a pop up store of mini-comics and books.

All of this month’s “Not to be Missed” shows are located in Everett Station Lofts.
