The Swedish hiphop/swing band Movits! are making their way through the music world, aiming for the top of the charts. A place they’ve already visited once with their ’08 debut “Äppelknyckarjazz”. After appearing on the American talk show “the Colbert Report” the album climbed to number one spots on both iTunes and Amazon charts.
Notable here is that these were American charts and Movits! are singing in Swedish, More on Movits + Hauschka after the jump…a language quite far from the lingua franca of the US. Stephen Colbert had found the video to the single “Fel del av GÃ¥rden” on a forum and despite the linguistic difference, he decided to invite Movits! to perform on his show.
On July 27 2009 they played on the Colbert Report and the rest is modern hip-hop history! It’s safe to say Movits! are on their way up. And if things slow down, there’s always the Gallagher-card to play.

Hauschka is the alias of Dusseldorf-based Volker Bertelmann, who signed to FatCat’s 130701 post-classical imprint in 2007. Having studied classical piano for ten years, his work as Hauschka is based upon an exploration of the possibilities of the ‘prepared’ piano. Creatively undermining the preconceived idea of the piano as a pure-toned, perfected instrument waiting for a gifted virtuoso to play on it, Bertelmann instead modifies it by placing an assortment of material (gaffa tape, kitchen foil, felt wedges, bottle tops, ping pong balls, guitar string, etc) within its innards.
What results are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm. As precised by Mojo magazine, “The sounds Bertlemann creates with(in) a piano are nothing short of astonishing.” Three well-received albums (2007′s ‘Room To Expand’, 2008′s ‘Ferndorf’, and 2010′s “Foreign Landscapes”) backed by an engaging series of live shows have seen the artist’s profile steadily rise.

Definitely cool the Movits thing is still going, they were great on Colbert, a buddy has seen them and said it is a very energetic show, would love to check it out. Cannot claim to know anymore about Hauschka then the description above, but I do love the piano, would also be great to check out.

I’d love to win a pair of tickets. I’m terribly uncultured musically- the last band I got excited about was Dispatch. I only found out about them a year ago and apparently they broke up in 2004.

I’m completely charmed by Hauschka these days! Free or no I’ll be there. Free tickets will be my opportunity to induce a skeptic or two to join me.
