Join us on Tuesday, May 3 to kick off three successive nights of fun, merriment, music and more to celebrate the official opening of our newest historic hotel, our first in downtown Portland! Tuesday night’s performance features M. Ward, with Corin Tucker Band, The Lord’s Own Choir, and other surprises. For a full schedule of events, visit McMenamins’ website.
The Crystal Hotelbuilding itself has had a long and incredible history since its construction in 1911. Throughout the past century, the site changed hands and names many times, offering a hotel, men’s bath house and night club, among other uses.
The historic hotel will offer 51 lodging rooms, which includes the option to buy tickets to that night’s performance at McMenamins Crystal Ballroom next door. The hotel will also house the Zeus Café, a Northwest café offering breakfast, lunch and dinner; Al’s Den, featuring nightly live music and artist residencies; a subterranean saltwater soaking pool and more.
Join us these three nights for a party unlike any other in the history of McMenamins Hotels, Pubs & Breweries!
About M. Ward:
On his seventh album, M. Ward cements his reputation as one of America’s most unique talents. Mention his name to any folk or guitar aficionado and you’ll be met with an avalanche of praise.Over the past few years, he has found an ever-increasing and dedicated audience; his last three albums – Transfiguration of Vincent, Transistor Radio and Post-War, all released on the Merge label – have struck a singular chord among music fans. His deft guitar picking, bar room piano, and voice like drizzled honey have also made him a huge favorite of music critics.
In 2008, M. Ward was part of the duo known as She & Him, a project he began with Zooey Deschanel and whose debut album, Volume One, has enjoyed international success. M. Ward is also renowned for his intricate production work, having helmed not only his own releases but also Jenny Lewis’ much-lauded Rabbit Fur Coat. He has collaborated with some of the world’s best musicians including Cat Power, Norah Jones, Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Neko Case.

Why do I want to go? Should be a great show!
sounds like an absolutely excellent way to spend the day!!
I would love to attend because it’s gonna be great music and I love McMenamins!!!
Yeah! Love M Ward and the idea of a new hotel on that block!
Because it is my birthday…and I would like to party there.
If the walls could talk… Would just like to immerse myself in the ambiance of this building’s history. Seething with hedonism…
I’ve loved what I’ve heard from M. Ward but haven’t had the time or money to see him yet. Also, I live just minutes away from the new hotel, and will done with the final exam of graduate school the day before. Couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than getting tickets to see M. Ward just blocks from my place!
I have been wanting to see M.Ward for years but have never been able to! I’m also a huge fan of Corin Tucker and have yet to see her new band live. Winning tickets would be pretty fantastic.
I have a true affection for the way the McMenamin brothers run their business. Working to save local history while remaking it into something that is functional in todays world. I would love to share in an opening of a classic building with some great musicians.
I love M. Ward and all he has been involved with, would love to attend this event.
I wanna go!
I moved to Portland thinking I’d be able to see M. Ward playing small shows all around town. Obviously I would get to meet him and we’d have a few beers talking music. But I have not come across said shows, so this dream has been delayed. Hopefully going to this show would be the first step. It would be epic. Also, McMenamins is the cat’s pajamas.
I think going to an event like this will make a great story to tell my grandchildren someday.
um, I am pretty sure that rocking out hard (and privately) to sleater-kinney sustained my teenage soul while growing up in sleepy suburban western washington in the 1990s…
M. Ward’s voice comes out of an old timey radio, all crackly and smooth and full of memories, haunted and wistful. His is the voice of the boy at the snowball dance who came over when i was the last girl standing against the wall, touched my wrist and guided me out to the waltz. He brings me back in time to a simpler, sweeter day when boys wore suspenders and the melody was all that mattered. He serenades this city and i choke back the tears.
I am just such a history junkie. Would love to see this space. Some really amazing musical accompaniment would be theicing on some delectable cake.
I have 2 friends who share a May 3rd birthday. Free tickets to this grand Grand Opening celebration would be grand indeed.
I would love to go -I’m a huge I love M Ward!!!
Um, I have a Hammerhead tattoo on my back….’nuff said.
i’ve always wanted to see m.ward live
I love everything about this. I have been awaiting the opening of this venue and am so excited that the grand opening is here! I want to go to this show so badly! I love love love She & Him and am really hoping I will get a chance to check out M. Ward.
I love Mcmenaminns! I would love to treat my boyfriend to a night out and celebrate passing his state exams! Send us a pait of tickets please, THANK YOU :D
I would love to win tickets. I have watched the construction everyday for the last few years from my office window and would love to see it in person and hear some awesome music.
Let me tell you why I would be the most amazing choice. First, a lifelong goal of mine is to visit every McMenamins location, and I have done quite well, and appreciate how they restore historic sites and serve great beer out of them. Second, M. Ward is my all-time favorite musician. He encompasses everything I love about music… great vocals and sweet guitar playing. His style, rhythm, and soul always comforts me, and one of his covers was even my “First Dance” song at my wedding… This would absolutely be something I would cherish forever. Thanks for considering me!

Im an investigator, and if I win it would give me the chance to clear up one last detail of “The Case of Missing Beer”
Whether or not the M in M.Ward stands for Maternity. Hmmm…
I have yet to see M Ward and all my close friends say I need to check him out and I can’t think of a better venue for my first taste.
Sounds super. And I want to see if the McMenamins removed all the skanky.
I would love to see the new hotel, the rooms seem awesome. Good food, great beer, awesome music….pick me
M. Ward and a grand opening of another fine McMenamin’s establishment are two exceptionally awesome reasons why I’d like to attend this celebration!! Sounds like it will be quite a fun event! :)

I love love love m.ward and the idea of seeing him in such an amazing venue tickles me pink! And seeing him for free will be over the moon awesome! Plus I can’t take the night off work and spend 50$ on a ticket but winning them is a whole different ball game! Pick me! Pick me!

I would like to cross this new pub off the list of McMenamins restaurants that I have been to!
I love the McMennamins other hotels (especially the St. Francis in Bend) and am curious to explore the new one!
Ooooh. I would love to win this for my boyfriend. He loves M Ward, yet my meager student income (aka negative income) prevents me from going out and buying him some tickets.
I would LOVE to go and take my friend who is a HUGE Corin Tucker fan!! Plus, I love McMenamins!!! :)
Many thanks!
I saw M. Ward in Eugene last year and he is great! I love the McMenamins and the Ruby beer! :)
I think this show would be a great place to gather some priceless quotes for overheardInPDX.com.
Because I never got to see Corin Tucker in Sleater Kinney! I have to make up for lost opportunities – and I really like M.Ward
This event sounds awesome, I would love to go!
I have to move out from living with my best friend. It would be amazing to take her out for an amazing night on the town before I have to leave Portland!
I think it would be wonderful if you gave me tickets because… …I’ve never been to the Crystal Ballroom
…I’ve never have seen M. Ward, Corin Tucker Band OR The Lord’s Own Choir
… I don’t have the money to buy tickets on my own
… I LOVE fun + merriment + music. :)
I think Crystal Ballroom/ Hotel is the best venue for live music in the world! Being a huge fan, I’d love to help celebrate the grand opening of the hotel and enjoy all the Fantastic music and merriments!
The relationship with my girlfriend is tenuous,
the Crystal is the venue for us
‘Cause I’m awesome?
LOVE LOVE LOVE “She and Him” and also M.Ward’s solo stuff.

I would love to go to the show and drink their IPA beer then spend a night in one of the brand new rooms!
I want to win these tickets because I just saw the pic of the soaking pool in the Crystal hotel & it would make it much easier to sneak in for a skinny dip :)
You can’t throw a rock in Portland without breaking a McMenamin’s window, and in their amazing establishments some of my best PDX memories have been made. I’d love to go and be a part of history.
Hello. It’s almost my birthday on may 7 and mothers day after that may 8 and I would REALLY ENJOY celebrating that early and the music is something I’d love something different and that’s what makes life interesting. I’m not overly rich. And so my best change in my daily work schedule would be knowing that this event would be remembered. I would like to take some photos to share with my friends and family if my fun night out.
mmmm. ward.
Mmmmmyeah! For M. Ward. Musical genius.
Love Love Love M. Ward and would love to see him live — never have. The closest thing is Austin City Limits…Never go out because I’m a sad old mom that stays home taking care of dinner, dishes, kids, vacuuming, etc…get it? Not that I don’t love being a mom…but I Need someone to catapult me out of my house! And, a ticket to get my hubby to come along would be great, we could use a date!
He was a big fan of Sleater-Kinney, and we’d both love to see Corin’s new gig. And, by the way- I love surprises, and you’ve promised some with this event.
I wanna go! I’ve been trying to convince friends and family to come visit me and stay there…that would probably make more sense if I actually went to check it out. Plus M.Ward, yay!
I want to go! We are on a VERY tight budget (like so many) and don’t get to go out too often and we L-O-V-E McMenamins! Also, my boyfriends birthday is coming up in a few weeks and it would make the perfect present for him! Hooray for PDX Pipeline :)
I have a super stressful job interview that day and this would be a great way to unwind afterwards.
I’m a big fan of M. Ward, never had a chance to see him live. I’d love to go!
I love M. Ward! Put my name in the digital hat please. :)
Because I saw it on bob loblaws law blog.
It would be an incredible first time seeing M. Ward and what better place then a converted bathhouse! That corner of burnside lights up in an incredibly beautiful way at night!!
I wanna go! I’m super-curious about this new McMenamin historic restoration and I wanna party too.
WOW! What an opening this will be! I’m very excited about this and thrilled that this is coming to the neighborhood!! Winning a ticket to this event would be AWESOME!!!! =D
I want to see a converted Gay bathhouse + Gypsy event space turn into a legion McMenamins! Plus it’s my 6 month anniversary with my Sweet!
I don’t get out much. Did I say I don’t get out much? Not me, I don’t get out. What’s you’re name?
This event is like the sun opening its eyes for the first time. Need we say more?
Great venue, excellent music and I never go out on a Tuesday night! Sounds fun!
A long-time fan of the Chrystal Ballroom, this will be the best place for my out-of-town guests!
