The influence of ’60s girl bands, The Ramones as well as surf and indie pop, still ring true for Vivian Girls. Yet on their newer material, we find a darker, moodier energy; a trait which arguably makes the band an even more appealing proposition this time round. Over the last year, the Vivian Girls have toured the US and Europe extensively, received a considerable amount of national and international press, sparked fierce debate as to whether they are a refreshing blast of unselfconscious punk rock energy or a crew of contemptible, incompetent posers and, perhaps most significant of all, become the subject of a question on the Jeopardy US game show.

Female-fronted noise pop group No Joy splits time between Montreal and Los Angeles. Not content to mine the depleted fields of shoegaze and twee indie sounds for inspiration, the group creates a maelstrom of melody out of both, with a layered, fuzzy approach that incorporates big, clean riffage, anonymous vocals hiding in the background, and a considerable churn across memorable four-minute pop songs. There’s a great deal more structure in their work than is found in many of their contemporaries, and their contemplative song structures work in favor to this approach. It’s the perennial box of chocolates filled with razor wire, but even the most fastidious of modern music archaeologists won’t see this one coming.

The Vivian Girls were the last show I saw before I moved out here. My best friend, who was at that show with me, is coming to visit from Ohio. This is the first time I will have seen her in a couple years and she would be so excited if I surprised her with tickets to one of our favorite bands!

  2.   Wolfgang Says:

There’s just never enough bands that explore the sounds of ’60s girl bands, and I would like to help keep this music alive by being present at the show!

My cousin is coming to town this weekend. She just got back from her 3rd tour in the Middle East. This show would be an awesome thing for her to see while she’s visiting.

  17.   Gene Craig Says:

If the YouTube video “Moped Girls” is a glimpse of this band, they appear to be as fun as the BareNaked Ladies, a band that always put fun at the center of their shows. This would make big points for me if I could take my daughter to see them.

  18.   OB1 Says:

I would like tix, because I actually surf … and I like rock music. Put them together and it should be one helluva night!
