North American Organic Brewers Festival to serve up more than 50 organic beers, cider and kombucha at the nation's most earth-friendly beer festival.

With a motto to ¬Å“Drink Organic, Save the Planet, One Beer at a Time,¬Â the North American Organic Brewers Festival will host its seventh annual event June 24 through 26 at Portland's Overlook Park.  More than 18,000 beer lovers are expected to gather at the event, billed as the nation's most earth-friendly beer festival.

Designed to raise awareness about organic beer and sustainable living, the NAOBF serves up more than 50 organic beers from 34 different breweries around the nation. There's also an organic cider and an organic kombucha. Styles run the gamut from Belgian Whites to Cascadian Darks, offering something for every palate.

There's also live local music, organic food, sustainability-oriented vendors and non-profits, a soda garden with complimentary Crater Lake Root Beer for minors and designated drivers, and a children's area.  The NAOBF is a family friendly event, and minors are welcome with parents.

Festival attendees sample beer from reusable and compostable cornstarch glasses made from domestically grown corn by a zero-waste, solar-powered company. Onsite composting and recycling stations are provided for festival waste and are supervised by recycling czars. Food vendors are required to use compostable cutlery and plates and employ sustainable practices. Electricity needs are met with a combination of biodiesel and solar generators. Volunteers wear organic cotton and hemp t-shirts, and all event signage is reusable.

Event hours are Noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission into the event is free. The purchase of a $6 reusable, compostable cornstarch glass is required for tasting beer, as are tokens, which sell for $1 apiece.  A full glass of beer or cider costs four tokens and a four-ounce taste costs one token; select beers cost double tokens. Patrons receive a $1 discount toward the tasting glass with a validated MAX ticket, a ticket from the onsite bike corral, or three cans of food for the Oregon Food Bank. The festival benefits the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and the Oregon Food Bank.

Why an organic beer festival? Studies show that the world's population currently consumes 30% more natural resources than the Earth's ecosystems can replenish. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, commercial agriculture is accountable for 70% of the pollution in our country's rivers and streams. Genetically modified ingredients can be found in nearly every grocery store.  The NAOBF believes that education and exposure leads to awareness, and awareness can translate to passion.  If everyone becomes passionate about sustainability, as a whole we can make the planet a cleaner and healthier place for all of us to habitat.  If the conversation starts with an organic beer, that's even better!

overlook park? beer tasting? sunny weather?
    you can’t go wrong!

  2. Minna May 30, 2011 at 10:34 #

Two tickets would be excellent! Didn’t really like beer until we moved here six years ago, and now I’m ready to venture into brews that take conscientious crafting to the umpteenth level.

  3. kate May 30, 2011 at 10:40 #

    What a sweet giveaway!
I think I should attend because (1) the local beer scene is tasty, (2) organic is the way to go, (3) the organic beer fest is a thousand times better and more pleasant to attend than the big beer fest on the waterfront, and (4) i have a sexy partner who not only thinks those three things as well but looks especially great while sipping beers and basking in sunshine.
    Thanks for the opportunity!

  4. Tracy Sagal May 30, 2011 at 10:41 #

Now this would be the perfect end for me, just about to receive my master’s degree in sustainable business…so I would get to see it in action and celebrate my efforts all at the same time! Pretty Please!

  5. Erika May 30, 2011 at 10:45 #

Orgasmic Beer?! Wait? What’s that? Oh…. *organic!*
Honestly, what’s more orgasmic than sharing a tasty organic beer with someone you love?

  6. Mike S May 30, 2011 at 10:47 #

This is the perfect kick off to “beer festival season”, and it would be nice to save up some money for the other ones in July!

  7. Angela May 30, 2011 at 10:51 #

I think I should attend because I’m a beer snob! There. I said it! Whew.

  8. Albert May 30, 2011 at 10:51 #

I should go for one simple reason, for a reason that cannot be trifled with. All other reasons are secondary to this one. It’s like an epiphany every time I think it, say it, believe it. A reason so simple it’s complex. And so complex it is simple. The singular most complete and perfect reason from me to go is,

I was born to drink good beer.
(And so was the person that ends up going with me. Born to drink good beer that is. You know what I’m saying. What am I saying? Oh yes, BEER!!!!!!)

  9. Leah May 30, 2011 at 10:52 #

I would be very excited to win. Beer itself is exciting, but I love that this is so earth friendly. The garbage and waste at these festivals is always a bummer. Hopefully this kind of thinking will catch on.

  10. Luke May 30, 2011 at 10:56 #

I had reserved this day to stand against injustice, fight ecological destruction, and drink beer. And then I saw this event. I can do all three. Hell yes.

  11. Beth May 30, 2011 at 10:58 #

I’d love to be able to go! Next week I finally graduate (and it only took like 10 years!) this would be THEE most perfect beginning to my first summer as a non-student! (does this mean I’m officially an ‘adult’?)

Looks like they have an amazing musical lineup so even if I don’t find a job before then to pay for tasting, at least we can go and listen to great live music!

  12. Jeannie May 30, 2011 at 11:04 #

I would love to win tickets to NOABF! I have never been. It sounds great!

  13. JOSH May 30, 2011 at 11:06 #

This is probably the best give-away PDX Pipeline has ever done! Haven’t won in a while, I think…..I THINK it’s my turn! :)

  14. Robert May 30, 2011 at 11:06 #

Why do i think i should attend? Because i just got back from two months in New York City drinking overpriced beer that didn’t come close to quality the micros and crafts in the PacNW. I have a lot unsatisfactory beer to make up for. That, and it would be ideal to have a member of #beergang there. I am a member of #beergang. It’s a lifestyle.

  15. Miranda May 30, 2011 at 11:15 #

I should win because I’m a regular at the naobf. Festin is a habit. Straight fest coastin!

  16. Joe May 30, 2011 at 11:18 #

I think this festival is GREAT!! I can’t wait to GO!

  17. Lori May 30, 2011 at 11:18 #

I think I should win tickets because I married a guy who hates beer. I know, I don’t get it either.

  18. Robert Dingwall May 30, 2011 at 11:24 #

I should win because I’m organic. Anything other than organic beer will kill me.

  19. Joe M. May 30, 2011 at 11:35 #

I love that they promote recycling and sustainability to the event. The bus pass discount is an added bonus, I would love to attend!

  20. Alexis May 30, 2011 at 11:53 #

Pick me so i can “drink organic, save the planet, one beer at a time.”

  21. Adrien May 30, 2011 at 12:00 #

I should win because I have to spend Memorial Day burning human corpses and thus could really use a pleasant afternoon with organic beer to look forward to.

  22. Patrick May 30, 2011 at 12:08 #

    I should win because:
    * I am a loyal attendee who brings a group every year by blocking out my calendar and pestering all of my friends to join.
    * I have been touting the quality and flavor of Portland’s organic beers for years since tasting my first Laurelwood and Roots brews.
    * I promise to post tasting notes to my website.
    * I will take public transportation to the event.
    * I will attend all days.
    * I will encourage festival organizers to offer an organics homebrew competition for future festivals.

  23. Greg May 30, 2011 at 12:09 #

I will post on every single beer related give away ever. I love my beer and I love free. Begin to expect it.

  24. Jana May 30, 2011 at 12:17 #

I’m not Vegan or vegetarian. I don’t recycle very well or bike everywhere. Organic food at safeway is too expensive, and I constantly forget reuseable shopping bags. At least I would be saving the earth by drinking?

  25. ah May 30, 2011 at 12:18 #

    sign me up!

  26. Jen May 30, 2011 at 12:36 #

I need to recover from the past few months with my favorite things, all of which are at NAOBF.

  27. Erin May 30, 2011 at 12:44 #

    Beer + sunshine + park = awesomeness.

  28. Brooke May 30, 2011 at 13:07 #

My roommate and I just brewed our very own first batch of organic oatmeal pale ale, and we need to do research for our next brew!

  29. Nicole May 30, 2011 at 13:10 #

Yes please! I would love to finally experience a Portland beer fest!

  30. Michael May 30, 2011 at 13:36 #

Even more excited for this festival. Thanks for the chance!

  31. Joe May 30, 2011 at 13:44 #

This fest might just have to take over as my favorite of the many Portland Fests. My wife and I our expecting our first child in July. And i have always respected how family friendly the NAOBF has been. Now we will get to enjoy that aspect of the fest as well!

  32. Mary Ann May 30, 2011 at 14:34 #

I love this festival. I have never won any free tix and this would be perfect.

  33. Sean May 30, 2011 at 15:06 #

I need to decide what I’ll be brewing for the BeerTree Brewfest and this will be just the kick-in-the-pants required.

  34. Gibbs May 30, 2011 at 15:29 #

I live juuuuust down the street and can very safely shuffle on home at the end of the night. That’s good reason, right? That, and a deep and abiding love for spending a day drinking excellent beer in a beautiful park.

  35. Jacque May 30, 2011 at 17:45 #

My beer education will be stalled if I do not attend!

  36. michael israel May 30, 2011 at 18:28 #

i have a deep rooted pedigree in tasting fine brew and can think of nothing i would rather do on a lovely portland afternoon

  37. eddie May 30, 2011 at 19:19 #

i just moved into pdx this weekend and would love to go to this fest!!!!!

  38. Theo May 30, 2011 at 20:20 #

This festival is one of my favorites and I always associate with the start of Portlanf Summer

  39. Theo May 30, 2011 at 20:22 #

This festival is one of my favorites and I always associate it with the start of Portland Summer. I really want to go experience the organic

  40. Donna May 30, 2011 at 20:31 #

  42. zee May 31, 2011 at 02:40 #

    Thanks
    Zee

  43. Lisa May 31, 2011 at 07:30 #

Hopefully it will be hot outside and I’ll need the beer to quench my thirst

  44. Tim May 31, 2011 at 07:32 #

This would make a great next stop on my ongoing tour of Oregon’s many beer festivals…

  45. Brandy May 31, 2011 at 10:03 #

My girlfriend and I should get to go because we’re just in Portland for 6 weeks this summer, between moving from Boston, MA to Los Angeles, CA! We keep hearing about the awesome beer scene and want to try it out for ourselves! :) Plus, my favorite beer in the world is organic — Mothership Wit! :)

  46. Shiloh May 31, 2011 at 10:13 #

Music, food and beer? Tell me a better way to spend the weekend!

  47. April May 31, 2011 at 12:20 #

I want to drink and have fun!

  48. JennyK May 31, 2011 at 19:35 #

The Organic Beer Festival was great last year…and it was actually during bright sunny days! Please take me back to that sunny organic goodness!

  49. Eric V May 31, 2011 at 20:12 #

what better reason to get outside and enjoy the weather?

  50. Darcy B May 31, 2011 at 21:19 #

Yes please–what could be better then organic beer!!! nothing but maybe free organic beer!!

  51. lao-ocean May 31, 2011 at 23:50 #

Beer is great, but organic beer? Even better!

  52. Pam June 1, 2011 at 12:37 #

OK, this one is really for my husband who is a beer guy. But I enjoy the NAOBF as well. It’s a great event, the music is good and the the beer is good.

  53. Rain Madrone June 1, 2011 at 14:29 #

I like beer, I like organic stuff – it’s perfectly Portland!

  54. Joe June 1, 2011 at 14:30 #

I need to test and see if it’s organic going in is it organic coming out?

  55. Sean Stutzman June 1, 2011 at 14:30 #

I was born an organic man. But over the years, secret agents have been poisoning me. My only hope of survival is to drink as much organic beer as possible. Please help me PDX Pipeline… you’re my only hope.

  56. Onyx June 1, 2011 at 14:44 #

    Right by my house:-)

  57. Frances June 1, 2011 at 14:50 #

I had so much fun at this event last year, I would love to go again!

  58. Maggie June 1, 2011 at 15:07 #

This was the only one of the major summer beer festivals I missed last year, and my AmeriCorps-funded self would love to be able to fill that gap.

  59. Kevin June 1, 2011 at 15:29 #

Where else can I use my beer tix for Kombucha tasting?

  60. Gil June 1, 2011 at 15:41 #

I am an Organic Native Oregonian that loves organic beer and promote sustainability in my daily life as I work for a super duper cool Wind energy company. Pick me and let me represent the love and roots that I will bring to this festival…….Organic+Sustainability+Love=Human:)

  61. SJ Miller June 1, 2011 at 15:57 #

Think Organic! Drink Organic! ♥ Life can’t get any better.
    ¡Salud!

  62. Kenny Schmidt June 1, 2011 at 17:16 #

This is my all time favorite beer festival. I love the beers/music & running around overlook park barefoot.

  63. Jacob Zumwalt June 1, 2011 at 18:07 #

I recently got my honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps and there is no other place I would rather celebrate than the NAOBF!!!

  64. TL June 1, 2011 at 19:10 #

I love to try different beers

  65. mary {lifeinspired} June 1, 2011 at 20:39 #

I live for organic beer. Done.

  66. Jeremy June 2, 2011 at 07:16 #

That will be my first weekend in Portland! I’ll be driving from Wisconsin and hoping to find a place to live that week. The tickets would help me meet some awesome new friends and determine if Portland’s beer scene can really compete with the beer-topia of Wisconsin!

  67. Tracy June 2, 2011 at 09:20 #

I’ve been waiting for this festival all season. Hoping Portland will pull out a decent day for it.

  68. Barbara June 2, 2011 at 12:01 #

Best beer festival ever. The people, the park…it’s perfect. Please pick me :)

  69. JenDubPdx June 2, 2011 at 12:03 #

This is one of my absolute favorite festivals! I cannot miss a year…especially if it’s free. :)

  70. Brendan Smith June 2, 2011 at 12:41 #

I absolutely love this festival. Last year I volunteered but this year it filled up before I could get a spot. I’m not sure I can afford to go this year so winning these tickets would be amazing!

  71. Leonard June 2, 2011 at 12:41 #

I drink organic beer whenever possible!

  72. Erin Holsonback June 2, 2011 at 13:09 #

I think I’ll be needing a few beers in the sun! Pick me!

  73. Emily June 2, 2011 at 14:22 #

I wanna go play. I love beer and when you drink organic beer you… its way better for you, haha right!? Please hook a sister up! I need a little sunshine in my life right now!

  74. Liz June 2, 2011 at 14:44 #

I think I should win these tickets simply for the amount of money I have spent my entire legal life contributing to the sale of purely organic beer. I refuse to save a buck on a cheap case of High Life or Bud. I will put up that extra bit of rent money for a good, well brewed beer from an organic brewery that deserves such profit from sales and recognition.

  75. Andrea June 2, 2011 at 14:49 #

I’m excited to see the organic movement gaining popularity in the microbrew industry. I have never been to this beer festival, and would love to attend and taste the different varieties of organic beer. Cheers!

  76. Nickie June 2, 2011 at 15:00 #

I like beer. Especially when it’s organic, and out in the sun, accompanied by live music. I’m not very lucky when it comes to these things, but these past few months, I’ve had more luck than ever. Bring it on! :)

  77. Will Gardner June 2, 2011 at 15:00 #

Organic goodness, good for the soul!

  78. Mark Fields June 2, 2011 at 15:01 #

  88. Carmel June 2, 2011 at 15:44 #

I would love to attend the Organic Brewers festival because out of all the beer festivals I’ve ever been to, this is the absolute best. The best beer, best food, best entertainment, the crowd maintains itself to a fun, but chill atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon. I also adore North Portland and Overlook Park provides the perfect setting. Besides, making organic beer is a practice this area has embraced and excelled at and I think more people should support it. Whether or not I win is irrelevant–we’re all winners when it comes to an organic brew fest.

  89. Sol June 2, 2011 at 15:44 #

Beer! What better reason is there to attend? Oh wait! Organic beer! Yeah!

  90. Frank June 2, 2011 at 15:45 #

This is a rad beer fest and it would make for a perfect date night! Would love to win the tickets!

  91. Harry June 2, 2011 at 15:47 #

What could be more organic than avoiding spending extra time at work consuming energy to earn paper money to be spent on the beer fest?

Would love to go to this festival again.

  93. Brian June 2, 2011 at 15:51 #

  99. Josh C. June 2, 2011 at 16:02 #

Here’s to being single, seeing double and sleeping triple! Pick me!

  100. Seth June 2, 2011 at 16:04 #

    Hell yeah !!
What better combination then organics and beer!! And what better supporter than a renewable energy engineering student.
give me a chance to show why supporting your science students with healthy, sustainable beer is the key to a successful scientific future for our country!!

We are the future, and beer is our fuel :)

  101. Roya June 2, 2011 at 16:06 #

    this sounds awesome!

  102. Andrea June 2, 2011 at 16:07 #

A most pleasing way to toast an exceptional year: turning 50, having my “baby” graduate high school, becoming an almost empty nester, surviving mortgage hell, and getting back to my creative writerly roots and pursuits. I would say I deserve an extended, celebratory session with the spirits!

  134. Meghan June 2, 2011 at 19:13 #

    BEER GOOD!

  170. Katy Barker June 4, 2011 at 15:00 #

My parents are coming in town for their 25th anniversary! I haven’t seen them since December, and would love to give them the best anniversary vacation ever! The Organic beer festival would blow their minds (as they come from the midwest, were there are not many good brews).

  171. Sarah June 4, 2011 at 18:11 #

  178. Bethany June 6, 2011 at 13:35 #

I hate beer. It gives me headaches and makes me feel full. But I won’t stop trying different beers until I find the one that is my match – the perfect brew that will leave me feeling sublime the next day and can go down easily without needing to chase it with a pretzel. Help me in my NW Brew quest to find the beer that loves me as much as I love it.

  179. John June 6, 2011 at 14:25 #

I love anything organic and beer is no exception. I can’t wait until this festival arrives and like any good Oregonian I will be taking Trimet and going no matter what the weather is.
