About BlackMahal & Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti
Part P-Funk, part Punjabi-Funk, BlackMahal is a San Francisco-based live music experience complete with drums, DJs, horns, hip-hop MCs, and the godfather of Punjabi-American music - Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti.
Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti is an American Music Icon and the most famous dhol drummer and Punjabi vocalist in the world. Known as the ¬ËœGodfather of the Dhol', Bhatti has performed for nearly every U.S. President since Gerald Ford as well as being honored at the opening of the Smithsonian Sikh Gallery in 2005.
After picking up the dhol drum instrument as a teenager, he quickly won the hearts of India by the way he played and was invited by the Government of India to serve as cultural music liaison to the country via worldwide music tours to 25 countries. For over four decades, Bhatti has used the power of dhol, bhangra and Punjabi music to bring people of all cultures together including performances at America's Bi-Centennial celebration in 1976 all the way to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as official Cultural Olympiad Performer.
DJ ANJALI & THE INCREDIBLE KID BIOGRAPHY
DJ Anjali and the Incredible Kid have played a transformative role in the Portland, Oregon club scene for nearly a decade, presiding over two of Portland's longest-running and most successful dance parties, as well as hosting a cult radio show on KBOO community radio. They are most known for incinerating dance floors with the South Asian sounds of Bhangra and Bollywood, but the duo scour the globe for any hard-hitting music that combines local musical traditions with window-rattling production. After making a name for themselves in their hometown's raucous house party circuit, DJ Anjali & The Incredible Kid introduced the Portland, Oregon nightclub scene to the sounds of Bhangra and Bollywood on New Year's Eve 2000.
After a series of residencies, beginning with a six-month residency at the legendary Blackbird, the duo began hosting sold-out ANDAZ dance parties in July of 2002. The party's focus on hardcore Panjabi Bhangra and the latest electronic confections from the Bollywood film industry continue to pack the dance floor after eight years. While ANDAZ was still in the bloom of youth, Anjali and The Kid founded the popular monthly ATLAS (with co-host/DJ E3) at Holocene in November of 2003, in order to share more of their musical passions. The ATLAS parties provide a forum for the duo to feature other sounds in their repertoire including: UK Asian Garage and Drum'n’Bass, Middle-Eastern electronica, Balkan Beats, Reggaeton and international Hip-hop.

I just spent the last two weeks traveling with my relatives. Passive aggressive comments about who’s life choices are the worst? Check.
Afternoons listening to grandma argue with her remaining siblings about who’s going to die next? Check.
Forced to eat faux strawberry shortcake from Walmart? Check.
Do I need to dance my ass off this weekend? Check.

I’ve had my eye on this show since I saw the first posting about it on Facebook. Life is hard, but dancing makes me happy. Dancing to this kind of live music would make me deliriously happy! DJ Anjali and The Incredible Kid haven’t let me down in years, and the folks they bring here are amazing. I want to win! I’m a winner, baby!

I should go to this because I just saw you at Sasquatch and am going through Punjab Dance Party withdrawals.

I’m going because I am being lured by the combination of a fantastic Punjabi-funk band and the best Bollywood/Bhagra & Asia Fusion DJs on the West coast & beyond. Anjali & Stephen have brought something that was completely missing from Portland a decade back, and they are still bringing it- better than ever! This show will be a masala of Bollywood, Bhangra, and Punjab in Portland- all over the dance floor. So the question isn’t why I should go, it’s how could I miss it?!?! ;)
