Portland’s famously fertile musical community has a really hard time setting healthy creative boundaries for itself. It’s a big part of what keeps our city’s music scene teeming with such an enviable array of new and exciting musical projects and prospects: experimental composers and sound artists frequently dip their toes into populist waters, just as pop musicians brazenly borrow from the annals of the avant-garde. From all five quadrants, the realms of sonic possibility are giddy with cross-pollination and unabashed genre-b(l)ending.

To capitalize on this unique confluence of creativities, Holocene and 66 Records presents NEW MUSICS, a quarterly series which invites Portland’s most exciting sound scientists and pop adventurers to collaborate with Read the rest of this entry »

Saturday Market JuneSurvival Guide to Portland Saturday Market
By Reid Decker

Summer time is here and that means getting outside.

Visiting the Market is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. The Market is more than just an attraction or something to do, it is an experience. For many people it is a life style.

Whether you found the Market on your own or you came down with a friend or relative, this is your chance to interact with the person who made the products you are purchasing.  Getting to know the artist will make you feel better about your Market buys.

The vendors you meet at the Market are more than happy to chat about their process and are proud of the labor and ingenuity that goes into making their products. Sharing their story is part of the process.

Remember to shop wisely. This isn't a big box store. These artists don't produce millions of pieces to sell at the lowest cost possible. They have put time and energy and the creative process into each piece they make. Now it is your responsibility to care about that process and give it value for yourself. When shopping at the Market you are supporting a local artist.

ROCKBOX is a dance party. Pure and Simple. The triumvirate of DJ KEZ (KBOO, THE FIX), Matt Nelkin (KPSU), and Dundiggy (THE FIX) play a masterfully blended mix of fun, dance oriented Hiphop, R&B, and Old School Electro with a dash of Bmore, Dancehall, 80s, and House thrown in for good measure.

As die-hard record collectors all three Dj’s play exclusively vinyl. Every set and every ROCKBOX dance party is a custom experience with these cats digging into their seemingly bottomless crates to pull out the beats that make you want to sweat out the work week. More than just another gig for these talented three, ROCKBOX dance party represents their long held vision of merging the classics alongside the progressive.
