Win Package: First Ever Portland Canned Beer Fest This Weekend @ The Guild | RideOn Benefit
July 5, 2011 — PDXPIPELINEWin Beer Packages: We have four packages to give out for the Portland Cans Fest this Saturday! Each package includes two mugs and ten tickets. To win, comment below why you would like to attend/win. Winners will be drawn and emailed on Friday, July 8.
——————

Canned beer is having a renaissance these days and many high-end craft breweries have begun producing beer in this form in the last years such as New Belgium, 21st Amendment, and Oregon’s own Fort George and Caldera. This weekend, The Guild is throwing Portland’s first Can Beer Fest. They are also shutting down the street next to their establishment, insuring a good time to mingle and taste.
PDX Pipeline is a sponsor of the festival and it is also a benefit for RideOn Portland. Another great Portland beer event, great weather (high 70s), and for a great cause. Can’t beat the Portland summer!

From Press Release:
The Guild Public House is pleased to announce The Cans Fest to be held during Oregon Craft Brew Month in partnership with Ride On Portland. Admission is free and the event is open to all ages. Tasting mugs are required to sample beer and will be on sale for $5 and tickets for 4 ounce tastes are $1.
The Cans Fest will feature beer from as far away as Colorado where Oskar Blues pioneered using cans for their product to local Oregon brewers, including Ft. George who just started selling beer in cans this spring. We'll have an array of brews that will satisfy the most novice beer drinker and impress the aficionados in the crowd. We'll be announcing the complete lineup soon, which will include beers not yet on the market.
The benefit of cans over bottles include better portability, being more environmentally friendly, keeping beer fresh longer, and getting cold much quicker than bottles. More than 100 American craft brewers have recognized these benefits and more in choosing to can their product instead of bottling.
Unlike most Fests, if festival attendees like a particular beer they will be able to purchase that beer to go from The Guild as they leave the event.

Could someone explain to me how aluminum is more environmentally friendly than glass? Just seem like they’d be equally enviro-friendly, since they’re both reusable.
July 5, 2011 at 12:16
Anthony,
The argument for canned beer is that while aluminum uses more energy when its produced, it requires fewer resources than glass. Aluminum is also lighter, which means less gas used in shipping. Finally, aluminum cans are more than twice as likely to be recycled as glass bottles, according to research.

I like the idea of helping people who want to socialize, but have a hard time getting home safely because they can’t afford it. I would like to attend such an event, plus getting to visit another (new to me) Portland venue for fun. Living 30 miles away means the extra expense of a motel, and winning the ticket package would certainly help.
July 5, 2011 at 22:44
This is a great idea, canning beer is really one of the best ways to preserve it in a true brewery-fresh state. Light simply cannot get in. Even the darkest bottles will let some light in & unless kept in a dark place, some qualities of the beer can be compromised. In addition to great taste, the portability is awesome, especially in the summer when you would prefer to avoid the embarrassment of broken glass at the park, riverside etc. Cans are now my go to for outdoor music and thanks to ever-expanding variety of microbrews, I don’t have to sacrifice flavor like I did in the past.
July 6, 2011 at 09:49
I always like trying new beers (or even old ones in new packages!), and having beer in cans is not only greener, it’s safer! I like bottled beer, but what I don’t like is seeing broken glass. Portland is always forward-thinking when it comes to the environment, so this Canned Beer Festival is a good fit.
July 6, 2011 at 10:10
Don’t bogart the can, man!
July 6, 2011 at 10:17
Yay! Another beer festival for the summer. Drinking beer makes me more environmentally sound? I can live with that.
July 6, 2011 at 10:17
Rad- Join the revolution! Backpacking or river floating both call for canned beer…. I especially like that you don’t have to sacrifice taste these days to get lighter packaging options- some activities just call for cans. PICK ME to win because I love the sensation of aluminum on my fillings!
July 6, 2011 at 10:22
I’ve been waivering about attending so this would seal the deal. I might even be generous and invite a friend to use the extra ticket.
July 6, 2011 at 10:29
Support the revival- Drink canned Beer.
July 6, 2011 at 10:46
My husband is a homebrewer and canned beer fan. Unfortunately, we have a young child and lack extra funds which often deter him from brewing and enjoying beer as much as he would like. Please pick me to win so I can finally give my amazing, hardworking hubby and awesome dad to oyr son the day off he deserves…enjoying good beer, with good people for a great cause. Ride On Portland!!!
July 6, 2011 at 11:07
Because beer really does taste better in a can.
July 6, 2011 at 11:26
I love cans! Before I discovered craft beer, I drank macros from the can. The feeling of a can in your hand is nostalgic and reassuring. There’s no breaking if you drop it, no special device needed to open it. And best of all, craft beer in cans looks more like off-brand soda or an energy drink than beer, so you can drink it anywhere.
July 6, 2011 at 11:46
I LOVE beer, but haven’t been sold on the joys of canned beer. Send me and sell me please! Plus I’m way too poor to go on my own :( Thanks for sponsoring these packages!
July 6, 2011 at 12:12
pick me
July 6, 2011 at 12:24
I’ve always wanted to shotgun a fancy can of beer
July 6, 2011 at 13:40
I wanted to go because I want to try some new beers. Thanks!
July 6, 2011 at 16:27
I’m originally from Ohio, where canned beer far outsells bottled beer ’cause it’s the best solution for football tailgating: no bottle opener required & no breakage. And it sure would be nice to drink craft beers out of a can vs. the sad offerings of anything with “Miller” or “Bud” in its name. Bring on the cans, man!
July 6, 2011 at 17:02
WOuld love to go to a beer fest whether glass or can beer is great
July 6, 2011 at 22:10
Little Big Burger was where I originally contracted the canned beer fever. Package winner or not, I am going to attend.
July 7, 2011 at 06:29
I think CANS will be the next big thing in the craft beer industry – portability + longer shelf life. I’m already going to be at the event as a volunteer (pouring mid-day), but I’d like to win tickets so my wife and/or some friends can go…
July 7, 2011 at 10:41
What other reason could there be than to drink free tasty beer.
July 7, 2011 at 10:42
Because I can, can, can! I am always interested in checking out new venues and I love drinking from a can. It tastes like summer and floating and sitting on porches. What better way to spend a Saturday than to taste new beers? Mmm…
July 7, 2011 at 10:49
I am due with our first child July 11th and I would love to get the husband out of the house and to one last beer festival before our little guy takes over for a while.
July 7, 2011 at 10:50
I love beer! And don’t know much about canned beer. Well, except that I couldn’t quite stomach that first beer I had, a can of Pabst, back in 1988. One sip probably doesn’t really count for a first beer, but whatever. I tried. Anyway, I would love to win, please and thanks!
July 7, 2011 at 11:31
beeeeeeer
July 7, 2011 at 11:31
I’m super excited, and am a lover of the can!
July 7, 2011 at 11:34
I live off cans and for beer. It’d be great to try some new ones. Plus, my sister’s going and I’d like to see her while she’s in town.
July 7, 2011 at 11:37
My forehead still hurts from when I tried to crush one at the bottled beer fest – this event should be way less painful.
July 7, 2011 at 12:04
Oooo…Pick me! I HAVE to drink canned beer when I kayak and though I found a few I like, I’d like to know that I’m drinking the BEST!
July 7, 2011 at 13:11
Stop talking and hand me a cold one.
July 7, 2011 at 13:38
Would love to attend – what a unique brew fest! Jesse did a great job on Live at 7 yesterday!! Love’n the Guild as well – check it out folks cool public house!!
July 7, 2011 at 13:42
I want to go because I am having an awful week and this would make it all better! And my paycheck was less than I thought this could fix the dilemma of how to go to this event with my fiancée.
July 7, 2011 at 13:42
I go to little big burger just for the canned beer.
July 7, 2011 at 13:47
Pick me cause I have the day off!
July 7, 2011 at 14:27
I would love this package because I am excited about trying *new* (well, new to me) beers in a can. Cans are so much more awesome for traveling, camping, and chilling down in a hurry. I also am broke as a joke.
July 7, 2011 at 14:28
because i need to offset all this exercise
July 7, 2011 at 15:28
Mmmm…..canned beer.
July 7, 2011 at 15:51
I would love the opportunity to experience microbrews available in cans! And, I’ve never been to The Guild Public House, so this would be a great time to go. I currently only buy 21st Amendment in cans, but would love to expand to others. Cheers!
July 7, 2011 at 16:17
Beer me!
July 7, 2011 at 16:17
Friend is in town from AZ, it would be fun to have her experience good canned beer!!!!
July 7, 2011 at 16:18
I once met someone that said that they wouldn’t drink any beer that could be served in a can. I would like to take them to the Canned Beer Fest to prove that good beer does come in cans!
July 7, 2011 at 16:18
I’ve missed (or will miss) most of the other beer fests in town this summer but it would be great to make it to this one and a ticket package would make it that much better.
July 7, 2011 at 16:19
Can we go to this beer festival for free? Yes we CAN!
July 7, 2011 at 16:27
as steve martin once said, ‘more cans!’
July 7, 2011 at 16:29

Beer out of a can tastes better too! A canned beerfest is the thing I’d like to do!!
July 7, 2011 at 17:47
Well you can’t play Wizard Sticks with bottles. No matter how much duct tape you have. Sign me up. For those who don’t know, Wizard Sticks is when you drink a can of beer (or Yoohoo, soda, etc.), then start a second and duct tape the empty one to the bottom of the new can. Repeat. Soon you have a Wizard Stick. Great camping/bbq fun.
July 7, 2011 at 18:01
It is my birthday and I like beer.
July 7, 2011 at 18:16
I’d love to go! I used to think good beer didn’t come in cans, until I tried Maui Brewing’s coconut porter. I’d love to find other tasty canned beers!

I need beer after my crappy week.
July 7, 2011 at 22:34
There are a lot of tricks you can do at a party with a can that you just cannot do with a bottle! And vice versa… but hey hats off to bringing the good beer to the can! This sounds like a sound reason for a drinking gathering, Portland style.
July 8, 2011 at 00:18
I’m a mountain yeti and usually drink pbr but i want something better please send me to the can beer fest.
July 8, 2011 at 00:27

July 8, 2011 at 00:29

What can you do with beer in cans? Anything in a boat or in the water. Golfing. It travels well in a suitcase without mishaps. Good beer is good anywhere you take it!
