August
By Mary Oliver
When the blackberries hang
swollen in the woods, in the brambles
nobody owns, I spend
all day among the high
branches, reaching
my ripped arms, thinking
of nothing, cramming
the black honey of summer
into my mouth; all day my body
accepts what it is. In the dark
creeks that run by there is
this thick paw of my life darting among
the black bells, the leaves; there is
this happy tongue.
July 22, 2011 at 10:20

I was born and raised in Oregon and continually look forward to the different berry seasons here. As I’ve grown up, so have my tastes and as a lover of food and berries I would really love to see what innovative and traditional dishes local chefs would make with the berries I’ve grown up with.
July 22, 2011 at 11:11

July 22, 2011 at 11:29

Not only berries, but Salmon, Scallops, Quail and Lamb Sliders. OH YEAH BABY. Stuff I adore and stuff I’ve never tried, such as Quail & eating at Uptown Billiards. Who knew? Not me! Educate my palate with this berry wonderful food & drink scholarship, dear folks. I can yelp and review eloquently in fair exchange, as my final exam. I’m licking my unschooled chops in anticipation.
July 22, 2011 at 12:01
NW Berries are best of all in America! Make this special event does make sense.
July 22, 2011 at 12:51

July 22, 2011 at 13:02
Do you remember in the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”, the character Violet Beauregard? She turned into a giant blueberry. Given the chance, and given my passion for berries – one day they might just find me, as they found Violet. Turned into a giant blueberry!
Few people would enjoy this event as much as I would…

I’m an urban farmer and cook, and with a cook’s wages these sort of events are difficult. But I’ll bring the knowledge I learn to my restaurant and to furthering Portland’s wonderful food culture.
